Concise Dictionary of Twenty-Six Languages in Simultaneous Translation

By Peter M Bergman

This book is in good condition. The cover boards have some wear on the front, Back and spine. The edges of the cover boards are also worn, and there is bumping on all corners of the cover boards. The pages are yellowed and tanned, but free of any markings. "The purpose of this dictionary is to simplify as much as possible and not to burden the reader with rules and exceptions of grammar, syntax, different word meaning and pronunciation. However, a remark about the transliteration is necessary. Generally the continental pronunciation of Roman spelling was used in order to convey the sounds of words belonging to languages with non-Latin Alphabets. Only for Russian the sound of the letter X which is gutteral, like ch in the name of the composer Bach, kh was adopted as commonly used. Stress always the accented letter in Russian and the apostrophized syllable in Greek...." - Publisher's Note from Concise Dictionary of Twenty-Six Languages in Simultaneous Translation

Ancient Christian Writers

By George E. Gingras

This book is in very good condition. The front, back and spine of the cover boards has no wear at all. The edges are clean and no bumping of the corners. The pages are crisp, white and clean of any markings. The binding is tight and solid. "The Diary of a Pilgrimage presented here in translation is variously known in literature as S. Silviae Aquitanae peregrinatio ad loca sancta, Peregrinatio Aetheriae, and Itinerarium Egeriae. Very probably written in the first part of the fifth century, the work is of major significance for the archaeologist and church historian, and especially for the philologist and comparative liturgist. The value of the document is unquestioned, though to this day major questions remain unresolved regarding who the author was and when she made the pilgrimage she describes." - Introduction, Ancient Christian Writers, Egeria: Diary of A Pilgrimage

A Primer of Medieval Latin

By Charles H. Beeson

This book is in good condition. There is some wear on the front and back cover. There is a stain on the front cover in the title. Most of the wear is on the spine with the edges beginning to fray.. There is also wear on the other edges on the cover. There is some bumping of the corners. The previous owners signature is on the inside of the front cover board and his seal is on the front end page. The pages are just beginning to yellow and tan.The binding is tight and solid. "The present volume is offered as a contribution to the promotion of the study of medieval Latin. It is intended to serve a twofold process. Its first object is to provide a collection of material that will prepare students, especially in the modern languages and history, who have had at least four years of high-school Latin, to read ordinary medieval Latin texts with a fair degree of ease and assurance. Its second object is to meet the needs of more advanced students who are interested in the field by furnishing an anthology of medieval Latin prose and poetry. The selections have been made with three classes of readers in mind: the classical student who is interested in the survival of the classical tradition in the Middle Ages; the student of the medieval literatures; and the student of medieval thought and culture. An attempt has been made to include as many of the great names as possible from Cassiodorus to Roger Bacon; to give specimens of various literary types; to present the widest possible view of the manifold aspects of medieval culture; and to give examples of the different kinds and styles of Latin." - Preface, A Primer of Medieval Latin

The English Missal For Laity

By W. Knott And Son Limited

This book is in very poor condition. The spine is loose and coming apart. The cover is worn and the lettering is gone. The edges and corners are worn There is water stains to the pages and cover. The previous owners name is written on the inside of the front board. The silk place markers have disintegrated. The pages are also tanned and yellowed but still readable. The English Missal is a translation of the Roman Missal used by some Anglo-Catholic parish churches. After its publication by W. Knott & Son Limited in 1912, the English Missal was rapidly endorsed by the growing Ritualist movement of Anglo-Catholic clergy, who viewed the liturgies of the Book Of Common Prayer as insufficient expressions of fully Catholic worship. The translation of the Roman Missal from Latin into the stylized Elizabethan Early Modern English of the Book of Common Prayer allowed clergy to preserve the use of the vernacular language while adopting the Roman Catholic texts and liturgical rubrics. The only difference in content from the Roman Missal is the English Missal's inclusion of certain texts from the Book of Common Prayer, including optional prayers from the ordinary of the Prayer Book's Communion Service and the lessons for Sundays and major feast days from the Prayer Book's lectionary, which was itself taken from the earlier Sarum Use Mass of pre-Reformation England.

Vergil's Aeneid Books I-VI

Vergil's Aeneid Books I-VI

By Vergil

A rare classic book published in 1930. This is a first edition book written in Latin. There is writing on the inside cover and the cover page. This edition of selections from Vergil's Aeneid (the Shield of Aeneas from Book 8 (8.608-731) and the Camilla sequence from Book 11 (11.498-596, 664-835), totaling 394 lines) is designed for high school and undergraduate use. It follows the special format of Clyde Pharr's widely-used edition of Books 1-6,1 like Boyd's recent volume of selections from 1-6, 10 and 12.2 namely the provision of vocabulary (and commentary) on the same page as the text. Boyd's larger volume included all passages on the syllabus for the Advanced Placement course 'Latin: Vergil', whereas the book under review, designed as a supplement (p.vii), is for use in other teaching and reading situations by fans of Pharr's presentation style. Whether teachers of Latin choose this edition will depend mainly on their opinion of this pedagogic strategy, but the commentary is well-pitched to its target audience, explaining difficult constructions and never specifically citing other scholarship. Bibliographies by theme offer further reading for studious teachers or students.
