This book is dedicated to Stephen Vincent Benét and his wife Rosemary (the rear cover of the dust jacket is devoted to a blurb by Benét about the book). This is the dedication copy, inscribed by Engle on the front flyleaf: "For Steve and Rosemary, with great affection, Paul, Oxford, Trinity, 1934." At the time Engle was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. He later helped found the celebrated Iowa Writers Workshop, and published a large body of work, much of it focusing on his native Iowa. (BA).
