Title-page and final page slightly soiled, tear to one margin without any loss of text. Full calf rebacked with contrasting morocco label. With the bookplate of Rt. Hon. Thomas Grenville. "Captain" James MacLaine (occasionally "Maclean", "MacLean", or "Maclane") (1724 - 3 October 1750) was a notorious highwayman with his accomplice William Plunkett. He was known as the "Gentleman Highwayman" as a result of his courteous behaviour during his robberies. He famously robbed Horace Walpole, and was eventually hanged at Tyburn. BOUND WITH ... The Authentic trial of Renwick Williams, for assaulting Miss Ann Porter on the night of the 18th of January, 1790; with an intent to injure her wearing apparel. Tried before Mr. Justice Buller ... Printed by J.S. Barr, 28 pages. This singular case excited universal attention; but many were by no means convinced of his guilt, believing that the witnesses, mistook the person of the prisoner. Full calf recently been rebacked with raised bands and morocco label. A few maps with minor creasing in the margins, lovely dark crisp impressions of the maps, which have been cleverly tipped-in on a blank sheet then folded, so they are easily examined without risk of damage when unfolding them. Three maps have contemporary hand colouring, Europe, Spain, Sweden. Great Briton is slightly creased and shaved along the lower edge. Wonderful quarto atlas, which was a standard work for many years hence the number of editions. It shows an early depictation of California as an island.. Full-Leather. Very Good.. Stout 4to. Book.
