Autograph letter signed to William Pengelly

Three page letter in the hand of Edward Capern (the Postman Poet), addressed from Bideford and dated Jan. 28th 1858. To the eminent geologist and discoverer of Kent's Cavern, William Pengelly. Edward Capern was known as the Bideford postman poet, born at Tiverton, much of his early life was taken up working in a lace factory at Barnstaple where his family had moved to. This work over a period of time affected his eyesight, suffering hard times he eventually found employment as a rural postman at Bideford, here he began writing his poetry, with his first work published in 1856 simply called " Poems." Lord Parmerston was so taken with his poetry he eventually awarded him a pension of £60 per year. Near Fine. Manuscript.
