Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1951. Collection of 35 small format vernacular photographs of members of the Cecil Young Quartet, including three of Sarah Vaughan, circa 1951. Thirty-one photographs show Young and bandmates Gerald Brashear, Jimmie Rodgers, and Traff Hubert, one photograph shows Young, Rodgers, and Hubert backstage, and three photographs show Vaughan, likely backstage at the Birdland Jazz Club, where the quartet opened for Vaughan in 1951. "The swingin'est Bop I've ever heard" is how Nat King Cole described the Cecil Young Quartet, who exploded onto the Seattle jazz scene in 1950. Young formed the quartet in 1950 alongside tenor saxophonist and bongo player Gerald Brashear, drummer Jimmie Rodgers, and bassist Traff Hubert. Recordings of the quartet's 1951 gigs at the Metropolitan Theatre and the Ladies Music Club got the attention of King Records' Sid Nathan, who quickly signed the act and released their 1951 debut album "A Concert of Cool Jazz." The album did well throughout the Seattle area,…

Description:
Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1960. Collection of six full-color vintage lobby cards from the 1960 film. From one perspective, a fairly one-dimensional representation-perhaps even a caricature-of Beat culture, but culturally fascinating in that it was made at the height of the Beat era, with A-list talent by a top studio, and, until Walter Salles' 2012 adaptation of "On the Road," was the only feature-length film ever made from a Kerouac novel. Kerouac was paid $15,000 by MGM for the rights to the book, and bought his first home with the proceeds, on Long Island. A film that rarely screened today, and has never been available on any kind of home viewing format. While its perspective on the actual Beat scene may be skewed or wildly misinterpreted, it is nonetheless important as an interpretation of Kerouac's world from the outside looking in. Shot on location in San Francisco, California. 17 x 13 inches. Very Good, with pin holes and a manuscript ink notation to the recto of…

Description:
New York: Ace Books, 1953. First Edition. No. D-15. First Edition, a paperback original. INSCRIBED by Burroughs, once on the title page of "Junkie": "For Allen De Loach / With friendship and all best wishes / William Lee Burroughs / April 27, 1974"; and once on the title page of Maurice Helbrant's "Narcotic Agent," printed dos-a-dos with "Junkie": "For Allen De Loach / William S. Burroughs." Burroughs' first book, inscribed to a close friend and important supporter. Allen De Loach edited the mimeo journal "Intrepid" out of Buffalo, New York. Like "Floating Bear," "Intrepid" was a mailing-list-distributed mimeo. Its issue 14/15 was dedicated entirely to the work of Burroughs and was the first serious and comprehensive examination of Burroughs' post-"Naked Lunch" work. De Loach often hosted Burroughs both at his home and for readings and events at SUNY Buffalo, where he also taught. Their friendship continued until Burroughs' death. De Loach also published most of the Beats under his Intrepid Press…

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1969. Single page, carbon typescript (the original letter presumably sent to Burroughs, this copy from Southern's estate), single spaced, with several typeovers. A friendly, sassy letter to Burroughs, beginning with an expression of Southern's great anticipation of a visit from Burroughs: "Buzz along the rialto has it that a certain grand guy W.S. Burroughs may be jetting Appleward anon. I certainly hope so, and hasten to assure that your quarters are being maintained in a state of round-the-clock readiness-with the E-meter fully serviced, tuned to needle-point precision, and porno flicks dusted and ready to roll! Meanwhile, I trust this finds you in top form and fettle, grooving there in Old Smoke." The letter goes on to speak extensively of Ed Koch's recent election win, focusing on what would appear to be a dense philosophical obsession TS has with the politician. Office stock, rectos only, 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine.
