Description:
New York: Film-Makers' Distribution Center, 1967. Vintage two-color flyer designed by artist George Maciunas, for one night of screenings of the 1967 documentary at the Village Theatre, presented by Jonas Mekas and the Film-Makers' Distribution Center to benefit the Film-Maker's Fund, presented here under the title "Lenny Bruce." A wonderful confluence of three iconic revolutionaries in their field. The striking graphic, comprised of red and black text, was designed by Fluxus artist Maciunas for Mekas and his organization, the Film-Makers' Cinematheque, to announce two benefit screenings of Bruce's eponymous 1967 film at the Village Theatre on February 17, 1967. Hosted by Mekas to benefit the Film-Makers' Fund, an organization established by the Film-Makers' Cinematheque to help fund independent filmmakers, the screenings were also a tribute to Bruce, who died only six months earlier. As stated on the delightfully worded flyer, "Lenny, who was rarely satisfied with any of his work called this…

Description:
San Francisco: Dadaland, 1970. Vintage Bill Gaglione [Dadaland] rubber stamp, circa early 1970s. An image of the impression, along with the address "Dadaland / 1117 Geary Street / Suite #21 / San Francisco, Ca. 94109" is on a piece of cardstock laid in on top of the stamp under an affixed layer of mylar. An amusing Gaglione piece appropriating a 1950s style bar and lounge motif. William (Bill) Gaglione, aka "Picasso" Gaglione, was a pioneer of the mail art movement of the 1960s. Working under the coded name "Dadaland," Gaglione took an active role in the New York Correspondence School alongside friend Ray Johnson. In the late 1960s Gaglione moved to San Francisco and befriended other mail artists, including Darlene Domel, whom he later married, and Anna "Banana" Lee, with whom he developed "Vile" magazine (1974-1983), a platform for documenting and chronicling international mail artists. According to Lee, "['Vile'] would look like 'Life' [magazine], but on close examination, would reveal its true…

Description:
N.p.: Self published, 1998. First Edition. First Edition. Perhaps best known for coining the term "concept art" in an essay under that name in the 1963 proto-Fluxus publication "An Anthology" (edited by La Monte Young and Jackson MacLow), Flynt was an integral part of the New York avant-garde art and music scenes of the early 1960s. His rigorous anti-art stance and confrontational protest tactics against New York cultural institutions of the period were recast to issues of philosophy, physics, and economics after studying communist economics during the early 1970s, though with no less a confrontational approach to bourgeois culture, formalism, and modern aesthetics. As a musician, Flynt is known for his fusion of high-brow and so-called low-brow music, creating "a new American ethnic music," deemed by Flynt as "Hillbilly avant-garde," and performed on violin or guitar. Flynt enjoyed a brief stint in the Velvet Underground in 1966, replacing an ailing John Cale. He also coined the term…

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1971. Vintage audio recording on three quarter inch tape, three minutes and 30 seconds long, of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on Radio Free London circa 1971. The couple spend the time advocating for free speech and on behalf of the founders of "Oz" magazine, then on trial for obscenity and "conspiracy to corrupt public morals." "Oz" was one of the most influentially designed and controversial underground magazines of the psychedelic era, and the trial became something of a cause celebre among the British left, with Lennon and Ono leading the charge, releasing a benefit single featuring the tracks "God Save Oz" and "Do the Oz" to raise funds for the defense and recording numerous radio spots such as this one to publicize the issue. In this recording, Lennon and Ono discuss the case and, after taking some shots at the presiding judge (whom Lennon refers to as "an old wanker"), Lennon sings the Harry Lauder standard "Keep Right on to the End of the Road," with Ono singing the repeated line…

Description:
N.p.: N.p., 1963. Original spirit duplication instructions for Allan Kaprow's "Tree, A Happening," a performance art piece which took place as part of The Yam Festival, at painter and sculptor George Segal's farm in South Brunswick, New Jersey, on May 19, 1963, with Kaprow's contemporary signature, "Kaprow May '63" in manuscript ink on top of first page. The instructions are three pages on two leaves, with text on recto of first page and recto and verso of second page. A forerunner of Fluxus, performance art, and installation art, Allan Kaprow's "Happenings" and "Activities" of the 1950s and 1960s heralded a new gallery-less approach to an art which could not be bought, and in Kaprow's own words "The line between art and life should be kept as fluid, and perhaps indistinct, as possible." The Yam Festival included actions and happenings by artists and musicians including Dick Higgins, La Monte Young, John Cage, Alison Knowles, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Wolf Vostell. 8.5 x 14 inches, bound with a…
