Atelier 41 / New World Pictures, 1975. Original Polish poster for the 1975 Japanese film, designed by B. Tankowska. Director Akira Kurosawa had long been a fan of V.K. Arsenyev's nonfiction account of his travels in the Ussuri basin in the Russian Far East, during which Arsenyev encountered and befriended a canny Nanai trapper, who subsequently became the guide for his surveying crew. After surviving a suicide attempt and with no prospects for film funding in Japan, Kurosawa approached the Soviet Union about backing the production of a film. To his surprise, the Soviets agreed, and the director spent nearly two years in the Siberian wilderness completing the shoot. The resulting film was a success, and launched Kurosawa into the prolific third phase of his career, during which he made his epic film Ran, among many others. Kirk Douglas and Earl Holliman reunite in this film after Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), again under the direction of John Sturges. The story brings together elements of "High Noon," "3:10 to Yuma," and Sturges' "Bad Day at Black Rock." Remade in 1985 as the Indian film "Bhawani Junction." Shot by Charles Lang on location in Old Tucson, Arizona, and set in the fictitious neighboring towns of Pauley and Gun Hill. Artwork by Jerzy Flisak. 22.5 x 32 inches, rolled. Poland: S. P. Eagle / Romulus Horizon, 1957. Original Hungarian poster for the 1965 film. In the final days of WWII, a 17-year-old boy wanders the countryside. He is captured by Soviet troops, then released, then captured once more. He has donned a German uniform for warmth and is imprisoned at a remote barracks, where he strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young Russian soldier. His attempts to return home form the film's landscape, with Jancso's signature themes on display, including the psychological presence of landscape, the randomness of violence, and the arbitrary nature of power. 22.5 x 16.5 inches. A driving instructor and former Gunnery Sergeant, Rafferty (Arkin) picks up two ladies (Kellerman and Phillips) who kidnap him in their attempt to get to New Orleans. Rafferty is at first distraught, but as their journey unwinds, the pair of misfits begin to work their charms, and the three of them travel in-sync until their brief bonding session comes to an end. 22.5 x 32 inches. A story set (and shot) in Armenia, about a young circus artist who goes on to be a star. The circus troupe of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic took part in the shoot. 22.5 x 33 inches, rolled. Poland: S. P. Eagle / Romulus Horizon, 1957. Original Hungarian poster for the 1968 film. Jancso's followup to "The Red and the White." In 1919, soldiers of the short-lived Hungarian Red Army are now on the run from relentless secret policemen and patrol units of the nationalist Royal Gendarme. If caught, they are executed without mercy or proper trial. Ex-soldier Istvan Cserzi has fled to the Great Hungarian Plains and has taken refuge on a farm run by two sympathetic women. With the help of the women and a former childhood friend, now a commandant of the local Royal Gendarme outfit, Istvan is safely hidden from the prying eyes of the secret police. However, upon discovering that the women helping him are secretly poisoning the mother-in-law and the husband, the legal owners of the farm, Istvan must make the most difficult decision of his life. 22.5 x 16.5 inches. Academy Award-winning (Best Sound) thriller about a construction engineer (Heston)and his possessive wife (Gardner, who insisted on doing her own stunts). The engineer, Graff, has an affair with Denise Marshall (Genevieve Bujold), the widow of a coworker. Graff's wife, Remy, puts into action several plans to keep Graf from seeing Denise, but everything comes to a halt when a devastating earthquake rips through Los Angeles. One of few films to be released in "Sensurround" sound, where theater seats would actually vibrate at a low frequency to mimic the "feel" of the film. 22.5 x 32.25 inches.
