Millar's inscription refers to their shared efforts in the mid-1960s to save the California condor, a species native to the Santa Barbara mountains that was nearing extinction in 1964. Millar would write the foreword to Easton's 1972 book "Black Tide," an exposé of the consequences of oil drilling on the California coastline. The thirteenth Lew Archer novel.
