Loosely based on the experiences of veterans of the 14th Regiment, a volunteer militia regiment composed primarily of abolitionists from Brooklyn, New York. The group is now best remembered for serving in the American Civil War, although it later served in the Spanish-American War and World War I. Based on the novel "Jovanka e le altre" by Urgo Pirro. Once branded himself by the House Un-American Activities Committee, award-winning director Martin Ritt focuses on the cruel branding of five women in this wartime drama. Some of his better-known films (The Spy Who Came In from the Cold, Norma Rae) also deal with the question of social and ethical choices in the face of pressure. In this story, the savagery of the Yugoslav partisans as they fight off Nazi occupation forces is also vented on five women accused of Nazi sympathies because of their sexual association with one German officer. During World War II, American sailors in the Atlantic are trying to get their oil tanker to allied Russians, but they are sunk by a German U-boat. After being rescued, they try once again to make it to the Russians, while dodging more U-boats and aerial bombs. Set in the Atlantic Ocean, shot on location in Santa Barbara, California. 10 x 8 inches. Very Good, with one tear at the middle left edge of the photograph and some wear to the finish and creasing. Also with paint residue at the middle bottom edge of the photograph.

Paris: Ucinex, 1963. Original pressbook for the 1963 French release of the 1961 Hungarian film, here under the French title. Black-and-white film stills surround a brief synopsis, with dramatic portrait images of Samoylova, and film distribution and publicity credits. Based on a true love affair between a Hungarian doctor and a Russian girl during World War II. Hajnal (Gabor) recalls through flashback the parting words of the girl (Samoylova), "I'll Come Back." Direcot Szemes best-known film, winner of a Silver Prize at the 2nd Moscow International Film Festival (1961). Single sheet folded once vertically, 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Very Good overall, with small tears, creases, and light foxing.

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1964. Collection of eleven vintage studio still photographs from the 1964 film. Based on William Bradford Huie's 1959 novel. A biting antiwar satire which follows a laconic US Navy officer who falls in love with a British woman shortly before being sent off on a dangerous D-Day mission. Shot on location in London, England and Oxnard, California. 10 x 8 inches. Near Fine.

A retiring bomber pilot intends to keep the new recruits focused by banning women from the base. Then he meets smiling officer Eve Canyon 8 x 10 inches. He saves Joan Madou (Bergman) from committing suicide after the sudden death of her lover, and helps her land a job singing in a nightclub. The two fall in love, but he is deported. Joan finds herself another man's mistress while Dr. Ravic seeks revenge by hunting for the Nazi officer, Ivon Haake (Laughton). Set in Paris, shot on location in New York and Paris. 8 x 10 inches. New York: Janus Films, 1961. Three vintage studio still photographs from the 1958 film. Based on the 1948 novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski. The last film in the "war" trilogy that began Polish director Wajda's career as a director, preceded by "Pokolenie" (1955) and "Kanal" (1957). A strong anti-war statement, framed in the personae of two men given orders - from the part of the resistance that opposes the new Communist regime, and on the last day of World War II in Poland - to murder a leading communist. One of Wajda's favorite performers and a friend, Zbigniew Cybulski, plays the man who eventually pulls the trigger and kills the communist leader, with unexpected results. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. A black satire documentary, presented without narration, tracking the beginning of the nuclear warfare era, compiling a wide range of archival material (including photographs, television footage, newsreel clips, advertisements, radio programs, and government-propaganda films) from the 1940s, 1950s, and early 1960s. 10 x 8 inches. One of Aldrich's finest efforts, among many, a noirish, personal take on the evils of war, with a interesting focus on nepotism. Unpopular on release due to a grim ending and a cynical tone, much the opposite of a flag-waving World War II film. 27 x 41 inches. Captain Franklin (Keir), a British officer, opposes the plan and has a personal vendetta against Wilson. The two are brought together when Franklin is slated to command the mine sweepers that transport Wilson's troops. Set in France, shot on location in London, England. The story of USS 'Belinda', Attack Transport PA22, launched late 1943 with regular-navy captain Hawks and ex-merchant captain MacDougall as boat commander. Despite personal friction, the two have plenty to deal with as the only experienced officers on board during the "shakedown." Almost laughable incompetence gradually improves, but the crew remains far from perfect when the ship sees action, landing troops on enemy beachheads-and with few anticipating the challenges in store at Okinawa. A true survival tale, as the soldiers must escort a scientist and his daughter to the other side of the island where their ship awaits. Filmed in Hawaii and Los Angeles. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.

Burbank, CA: The Malpaso Company, 1971. Vintage borderless photograph of Clint Eastwood and Don Siegel on set from the 1971 film. With a rubber stamp crediting photographer Andre Marinie on the verso. Based on Thomas Cullinan's 1966 novel, set during the American Civil War, about an injured Yankee soldier (Eastwood), who is rescued by a teenage girl from a Southern boarding school. At the school, the students and staff are at first shy to the soldier, but as he recovers his charms win them over. As he "seduces" nearly every student and staff member, jealousy among them arises, creating a steamy and sadistic theme (including some scenes of sexual tension that "beguiled" censors and audiences of the 1970s). Don Siegel would direct Eastwood the same year in "Dirty Harry," a far throw from the dramatic, repressed feel of this film.
