The first women to become president of a major educational institution, Wellesley College at age 26. In the early 1890's she became the first president of the new University of Chicago. Throughout her academic career she was a staunch advocate of higher education for women during the late 19th century. Palmer's life was commemorated at a service at Harvard University in 1903 attended by college presidents whom she knew and other notable individuals in higher education. Unopened, printed at the Merrymount Press by D.B. Updike.

Very good.. 272 pages in text. 15 x 10 1/2 cm. 25 numbered full-page plates (some double-paged), plus 32 supplemental plates numbered A-Z, AA-FF, with additional plates and illustrations within the text - all in black and white. Text in French, interior clean, initial decorated letters, Glossary of Principal Terms. Practically speaking, artificial flowers differed only in a single feature -- whereas real flowers wilt, 18th and 19th century cloth, paper or wax blooms were relatively imperishable. In the Victorian era artificial flowers were ubiquitous, a woman's garland for all seasons including her death. Initially fashioning flowers was considered an art and craft explicitly reserved for genteel women. Ex-library, internal marking only, discreet one centimeter round on verso of some plates.

Seventy-four full-page hand-colored aquatint plates, all with tissue guards. Born in Canada, Grasset removed to France in 1764, serving there as writer, diplomat and publisher with a bent toward Republicanism and enlightenment ideals. Set complete in four volumes. COLAS 1879-81. Plates clean, fresh and bright, raised bands, spine labels in red and green, edge scuffing, one centimeter chip backstrip foot toward rear cover.

Buenos Aires: Govone, 1947. Orig. printed stiff wrappers, text uncut and unopened laid-in. Near fine. 137 pages. 32 x 24 cm. Limited edition, copy 169 of 250 of a total edition of 311. Full page black and white illustrations by Lydis. Lydis was known for her lithographic depiction's celebrating lesbian and bisexual relationships. She was influenced greatly by Foujita whom she befriended during her time in France. Text in French. Slight nick to backstrip at front cover joint head.

Armorial bookplate of Sir John Mordant. In London her home on Hill Street had become the premiere salon in London. Samuel Johnson, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Edmund Burke, David Garrick, and Horace Walpole were all in the circle. She also patronized a number of women authors, including Elizabeth Carter, Hannah More, Frances Burney, Anna Barbauld, Sarah Fielding, and Hester Chapone. Described by Thomas Warton as the most elegant and judicious piece of criticism of the age. Warton, English literary historian, critic, and poet, and from 1785 to 1790 the Poet Laureate of England. ROTHSCHILD 1449. Raised bands, spine label lettered in gilt, joints rubbed, contents generally clean.

Numerous watercolor pen and ink illustrations, pencil and charcoal, and tipped-in designs [nine are tipped-in fabric samples]. Fashion manuscript by a young Coos Bay, Oregon student. She includes skirt, blouse, and sleeve designs for wool, cotton and synthetic fabrics, all are designs for women with varying proportions -- dress and fashion designs to scale with fabric samples depicting plain, knit, basket, pile and silk weaves, as well as weaving instructions.

Jack: "Why you must know Uncle, out of so many I was in hope to have met with a Good one -- but by St. Patrick I have been taken in." Slight browning.

Limited edition, copy 752 of 1000 signed by Gross on the colophon page. This marks the first time The Limited Editions Club has published an edition illustrated by the author. Laid-in The Limited Editions Club Letter, Number 544 (December 1985) and The Club's invitation to a reception for Grass at the New York Public Library, January 16, 1986 the cover of the invite illustrated by Grass: lizard and key motif.
