C.P. Rail High Level Bridge at Lethbridge

By Johnston, Alex

Lethbridge, AB: Lethbridge Historical Society, 1993 Occasional Paper No. 12. The new railway line between Lethbridge Junction and Fort Macleod was built in 1897-98. It was 37 miles long and included the construction of 20 wooden bridges. By 1904 they were in a bad state of repair. During the summers of 1904/1905 survey parties were exploring an alternate route to Macleod. In 1906 the news broke that the CPR would be building a steel bridge, "which will be one of the wonders of the world." The new bridge would be about one mile long and 300 feet high. This book documents in word and picture the construction of this bridge. Illustrated card cover with staple binding, many black and white photographs, 40 pages. Light shelf wear with a few light creases and pressure marks, a few light spots of discoloration, inside clean and tight. For some international orders we will ask you to approve additional shipping charges to cover the cost of tracking and insurance to your country, but no extra charge will apply without your consent. Card Cover. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.

Washington, D.C.: U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1906 "The Red Gum: with a Discussion of The Mechanical Properties of Red Gum Wood" Introduction: "Only in the last few years has enough southern red gum been marketed to warrant the National Hardwood Manufacturers' Association in giving it a class and a special grading. Previously to this time the manufacture of gum was in an experimental stage, owing chiefly to its tendency to warp and twist, and also to the fact that the supply of other hardwoods was so large that there was no incentive to work so low-priced and supposedly unstaisfactory a wood as gum."
