Beautiful copy of the first novel written by Frances Hodgson Burnett, published as a book in 1886. This edition, dated 1916 on the title page, features the sentimental illustrations by Reginald Birch that had such an effect on fashion for little boys and was the target of satire for generations. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1916, copyright 1886, 1897, 1911 by Charles Scribner's Sons; copyright 1913 Frances Hodgson Burnett. Preface by Burnett dated July 16, 1911. Tissue protected color frontispiece plus eleven color plates and numerous black and white drawings illustrate the 246 pages. Original blue cloth hard cover binding with original polychrome illustrated image and yellow lettering pasted to front cover, gilt lettering on spine, gilt top edge, rough cut front edge of pages. Spot on back cover with wrinkles, smaller spots at lower edge and 2 inch scratch on back, gilt bright, cover color bright, small chips in pasted image, corners and spine ends a little bumped, binding tight. Gift inscription and notation on front free end paper, interior pages lightly tanned with a little spotting, chip in leading edge of half title, one plate detached from binding and laid in, 2 1/2 inch tear in leading edge of one plate. Book measures 6 3/4 x 9 1/8 inches.

Light edge wear, a little bumping of corners and spine ends, lettering clear and sharp. Interior pages are bright but a few of the first pages are stained at edges, showing onto edges of pages. Mylar protected color illustrated brown dust jacket with white and yellow lettering on front cover and white lettering on spine, list of other books in the series on back cover of jacket. Slight chips at edges of jacket with creases, larger chip at bottom of spine, pencil initials in front cover through mylar, otherwise very clean and bright on front with some tanning of back and a little spotting, small crease and tear at top edge of back jacket.
