Description:
Woman's Suffrage failed in all three states that held suffrage referenda on November 2, 1915: New York, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts. [WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE].
"Vote for Woman Suffrage Nov. 2nd." [New York, 1915]. 1 p., 13¾ x 20 in.
Historical Background
On November 2, 1915, male voters rejected women's suffrage by a majority of 58 percent in New York, 53% in Pennsylvania, and 64.5% in Massachusetts. Undaunted, the American Woman Suffrage Association continued to press their case. When asked how long the triple defeat would delay their next attempt, Anna Howard Shaw replied, "Until we can get a little sleep. The fight will be on tomorrow morning—on forever, until we get the vote."

In 1917, the New York legislature allowed a second referendum, and this time, it passed by a vote of 703,129 to 600,776, with the entire margin of victory coming from New York City.

World War I became an important lever for the national suffrage movement, which pointed out the hypocrisy of American claims to… Read More

Description:
"it is clear that woman suffrage should be discarded for the following reasons: First. It disrupts the home.... Second. The woman is physically unfit for certain offices.... Third. Politics is the most corrupt game of the age.... Fourth. The right to vote does imply the right to become eligible to nomination or election to public offices.... Fifth. The influence of the woman should be of a persuasive nature, and should be exercised at home.... Sixth. Jealousy would destroy domestic happiness.... Seventh. Women voters are unnecessary.... Eighth. Women could never control men, on account of weaker physical conditions.... Ninth. The needs of the family would be increased while incomes would decrease.... Tenth. When the woman is with child, she is liable to suffer as a result of any emotion or abuse...." (p74-76)

ANNA ELIZABETH DICKINSON.
Autograph Letter Signed, to A. Boyd. August 1, 1866. 2 pp. "Dr. Holmes somewhere says that, 'Apology is but one form of Egotism.' So I shall make none. Nevertheless, - I had I earlier seen your letter, which had been in my hands, I should have sooner answered it …"

Anna Elizabeth Dickinson (1842-1932) was a gifted orator and the first woman to speak before Congress. She was removed from a clerkship at the U.S. Mint for criticizing General George McClellan's handling of the war. She campaigned for the Republicans in 1863, and continued her lyceum speaking tour after the war. After a stint acting in Broadway plays, her sister had her committed to a mental institution. Upon her release, she sued those who had her committed and the newspapers that had labeled her insane. She won in court, but the press retaliated by stopping coverage.
