Description:
Front hinge a little weak, but all pages are tight, clean, complete and unmarked. Some fraying at head and heel of spine. Not an ex-library copy, no stickers, owner's namer, etc., A little fragile, with some age-browning of paper. Part of Bohn's Antiquarian Library. Five shillings price gilt-stamped on spine.

Thomas Pettigrew (1791-1865) was an English surgeon, professor of anatomy, an antiquarian with wide-ranging interests in history and natural philosophy, and an expert on Egyptian mummies. He became surgeon to the Duke of Sussex and Duke of Kent,
and was a founding member of the British Archaeological Association.

Based on a life-long interest, his is one of the early works to treat extensively of the history, significance and variety of epitaphs.
He provides many examples through the ages of all types of epitaphs, inscriptions and funereal motifs. This work remains a classic.
