The Puffin Book of Nursery Rhymes

The Puffin Book of Nursery Rhymes

By Opie, Iona; Opie, Peter; illustrated by Pauline Baynes

United Kingdom: Penguin, 1972. Reprint of 1963 Puffin original. 219 pages including index and notes. Tight binding, square uncreased spine. Wear to cover with corner crease; former owner's name on cover and top edge as well as address label on 1st page (did they have a theft problem at her school?). Page edges age-toned. Marginalia scattered throughout; fairly neat and legible handwriting and generally only a few words to a page; the owner apparently was using this book in a university course. Usually of interest, the marginalia range from the informative (Three Blind Mice "1609 or earlier") to the extremely far-fetched (Humpty Dumpty: "Osiris figure, spring god died and was scattered"). Amusing and educational, not that we needed them much with the Opies' usual erudite contributions in the back of the book.. Soft Cover. Good. Illus. by Pauline Baynes. 5 x 7.75 in. (12.5cm x 19.5 cm).
