Buhler, Gauss: A Biographical Study, writes of Schlesinger's essay: "The main topics are agM (arithmetico-geometric mean), elliptic functions, the hypergeometric function, and conformal mappings. Schlesinger's main problem was that he had to extrapolate comparatively much from unfinished, fragmentary papers. Despite a number of questionable details and assumptions one can consider the essay as the standard source and reference for Gauss's work in this area. .
