In the mid-1800s, Blount County officials found the deed books of the county in a state of deterioration and they voted to have the books copied into new ledgers. After being copied, the original books were destroyed. Each deed contains the date the deed was written; the consideration for which the property was conveyed; a description of the property including location and adjoining property owners, when known; names of witnesses; and date of registration by county clerk. The deeds of this period reflect the hard circumstances in the early 1820s following the Panic of 1819. A surname index adds to the value of this work. .

Here is a new research aid on Bedford County that until now has never been published or even available for the researcher looking for those lost relatives in this middle Tennessee county. This index is a true copy of a Registers notebook, kept by the Register of Deeds, immediately preceding the Civil War, in which an index of all transactions conducted in the office, were entered from 1852 to 1861 and served as an index to 9 books that were "LOST" in the courthouse fire of 1863. This "Burned Index" may prove to be both rewarding and at times a little frustrating. Rewarding, in the information it may disclose, however small, perhaps a piece of the puzzle. This volume transcribes personal property deeds for Davidson County, Tennessee, from 1821 to 1829, identifying family members (and relationships) for both white and black families. Records include deeds of trust, deeds of gift, deeds of transfer, bills of sale, mortgages, marriage agreements, powers of attorney and other agreements. These records are particularly full of slave sales and therefore a most valuable resource for African-American researchers. Slaves are listed by family units; ages and physical descriptions are included. The inventories give us a picture of the early days in Middle Tennessee, listing the home furnishings, books in the home library, and early business inventories down to the last set of sheets in the Nashville Inn. The records show that many of the men who came into this area beore the county was organized were Revolutionary soldiers and that their wives in many cases were daughters of soldiers of that war. Many were given land grants for service rendered their country. Some brought their slaves from as far east as Massachusetts. Their wills show that besides land, slaves and stock, they possessed furniture of the best make. They were mostly people of education, as their letters and signatures testify.
