A very detailed study with history information. Concluded by a bibliography on Pepsin. This work was originally published in1887 as a thesis (Ecole Supérieure de la Pharmacie, Paris, 1887). According to the World Cat. held in only 3 libraries worldwide.

Modern half brown chagrin (shagreen) with raised bands, gilt lettered on spine (antique style). ¶ Very rare Dutch translation, only one other copy recorded. The author is best known as the founder of scientific paediatry and his interest in infant nutrition. The present travel & household dispensatory was one of the best of the period and especially written to prevent the laymen from malicious medicines and quackers. The translator, P.E. Wauters, took the opportunity with the publication of this Dutch translation to put a notorious local quacker out of business: ... Lugduni (Lyon),: Joannem Certe,, 1686. [xii], 413, [xxxiii] pp. Small 8vo (9,3 x 15,3 cm.). Contemporary brown calf (top and bottom of spine slightly damaged; upper edge of the front side slightly rubbed; corners a bit bumped), Spine in compartments gilt decorated and lettered; speckled edges. Seme wood-engraved head and tail pieces. With a contemporary engraved bookplate of Ludovicus Feuilherade M.D. ¶ Apparently the ONLY copy known of this 1686 Johannem Certe edition. The official "Editio secunda" was published by Certe in 1687. Presumably the 1686 edition was printed at the occasion of Tencke's inauguration at Montpellier in 1686, but the printer overlooked to print the King's approbation within this 1686 edition. Certe has to cancel the edition and released a little bid later (1687) the correct edition with the approbation. The 1686 editions: Montpellier Peronnel & Venice de Rhinetta, are pirate editions. No copy in the BNF or NLM, nor in the World Cat.

Orig. boards preserved in a slip-case. In 1695. A.H. Francke founded the Hallische Waisenhaus which became instantly famous. Their secret tincture Essentia dulcis was one of the most desired medicines of 18th century Germany. The Madai manuscript, which was kept in secret for 200 years, throws light on on the ingredients and composition of the Geheimmittel and several Wundermedizinen.
