Boston Medical and Surgical Journal was published Wednesdays by D. Clapp, Jr., of 184 Washington Street, Boston. This number dated Wednesday, November 29, 1837. String-tied, octavo, annual pagination [261]-276. FAIR-only with foxing, old tide-lines, creasing, and short marginal tears. Safely stowed now, however, in a clear new Ultra-Pro sleeve with white card stock backing board. The Lead articles this week were "Functions of the Brain" and "Formation of the Brain, Heart, &c." Also contains "A Case of Malformation of the Septum Narium"; "Liston's Surgery"; and a brief Yarmouth, Maine, obituary for a Dr. Gad Hitchcock, "aged about 50." Of present day interest is a short ad on the last page informing physicians that they can procure "ten quills charged with PURE VACCINE VIRUS" for $1.00, post paid. Includes a few additional notes and advertisements.

Publisher's stapled and string tied-wrappers, 12mo, pp. 32. Includes Religious, Patriotic, and Popular sections. Music and lyrics for "Maryland! My Maryland!"; "My Old Kentucky Home"; "Star-Spangled Banner"; among others. Lyrics only for "Dixie." Contemporary ads. POOR condition. Cheap paper is heavily toned and crumbling, almost at the touch. Heavy edge wear and chipping. Ensconced now by us in a protective new Ultra-Pro sleeve.

Removed from a bound volume, octavo, pp. 16 + [4]. Spine scuffed with strands of binding string exposed. Old vertical crease at center of the volume throughout, as though folded for insertion in a jacket pocket. About GOOD condition, withal. INSCRIBED at top edge of title page "With the respects of T[homas] C[ogswell] Upham." The notable Upham (1799-1872) was an influential Bowdoin College professor, author, and friend to Harriet Beecher Stowe during her residence at Brunswick, Maine. Stowe described the Uphams as "delightful" and "a beautiful pattern of a Christian family." A small indentation near the fore-edge of the first three or so leaves (see Photo 5 for our best attempt at a close-up), but near fine, nonetheless. Includes publisher's descriptive booklet. Booklet was a trifle crimped at edges during publisher's packaging process.

A special thin paper reprint edition of Volume I, Number 11 of The Endocrine Survey of August, 1924, submitted as a specimen copy to entice subscribers. Octavo, paginated 421-462 plus ads, front and rear. Light age toning, but easily very good copy in stapled gray wrappers. This uncommon specimen not recorded in OCLC as of May 2019.
