Spine has five raised bands, gilt lettering and ornaments, date of publication to foot of spine. Boards have triple gilt fillet border, single gilt fillet to edges. Marbled endpapers, ornately decorated wide turn-ins plus gilt border to pastedown endpaper. Top page edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. Original cloth covers have been mounted and bound in. Spine is slightly faded, the binding is otherwise in excellent condition. Offsetting to free endpapers from decorated turn-ins, light foxing to page edges, half title and last page of ads. Several pages have light staining to very edge of the lower margin, text is otherwise very clean throughout. Includes the publisher's adverts and the preceding slip advertising Stones of Venice as in preparation. Engraved bookplate to front pastedown endpaper (Sir David Salomons Bart., Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells.) An interesting character, Salomons was elected as both Sheriff and Lord Mayor of London, the first Jew to hold either position. In 1851 he became the second Jewish elected Member of Parliament, Lionel de Rothschild was the first in 1847, but at the time neither were permitted to sit in the House of Commons due to the Christian oath. The verso of the front free endpaper has a few notes that appear to indicate that the book was bought in 1892 for £6 and the binding cost £2 and 5 shillings. The leading blank has a pasted slip from a bookseller's catalogue for this volume priced at £8/0/0. The first printing of Ruskin's landmark work, an excellent example in a Zaehnsdorf binding of the very highest order. We also have a uniformly bound first edition set of Ruskin's Stones of Venice. Overall condition is Very Good Plus. Hardback. Printed pages: viii, [4], 205, [1], 16 (ads)
