Lockley was a lifelong friend of the Huxley's, and they had collaborated on Alexander Korda's 'The Private Life of the Gannets' in 1934. He was in contact with several members of the Oxford Group, campaigned in Canada against the hunting of baby seals, and ultimately served as president of the RSPCA in 1982. Ryder was an early member of the Oxford Group who, in 1970, coined the term speciesism. He served as president of the RSPCA from 1977-1979. Included with the book is a hand written letter from Ryder to Adams. Written on headed paper, folded with a game score written to reverse (presumably by Adams - Dad vs Dog).
