London: Centaur Press Ltd, 1979. 1st Edition . Very Good/Very Good. 5.75 x 8.75 inches (14.5 x 22.5 cm). Signed by Author. Dust jacket: Light creasing to foot of spine. Unclipped. Includes papers by many of the founding fathers of the modern animal rights movement, including groups such as Tom Regan, John Harris, Ruth Harrison, Brigid Brophy, Andrew Linzey, Stephen R.L. Clark, Jon Wynne-Tyson and a preface by Peter Singer. The conference produced a declaration appealing for animal rights and an end to speciesism, which was signed by 150 attendees. This copy comes from the private library of Richard Adams, author of Watership Down with his attractive bookplate to front pastedown endpaper. Inscribed to Adams and signed by Richard D. Ryder: ' Richard Adams, with our compliments, Richard D. Ryder.' Following the publication of this hugely successful debut novel in 1972, Adams became very active in the evolving animal rights movement. He was in contact with several members of the Oxford group, campaigned in Canada against the hunting of baby seals and ultimately served as President of the RSPCA in 1982. An important record of this landmark conference. A very rare signed copy, with excellent association. Overall book condition is Very Good. International postage will be less than the stated rate.
