Report of the Third International Conference 1906 on Genetics: Hybridisation (The Cross-Breeding of Genera or Species), The Cross-Breeding of Varieties, and General Plant-Breeding (Royal Horticultural Society)

By William Bateson / W. Wilks (Ed.)

London: Printed for the Royal Horticultural Society by Spottiswoode and Co. Ltd., 1907. 1st Edition . Very Good Minus. 6.75 x 9.75 inches (16.5 x 25 cm). Grey cloth binding, worn to corners and ends of spine. Ex University of California Library with labels to foot of spine and front pastedown endpaper, stamps to endpapers and randomly throughout the text. Browning to endpapers, light browning to text. Pencilled notes to verso of front free endpaper. Numerous illustrations including some fold-outs. 3 plates in colour. Originally issued in paperback, this copy retains the printed front wrapper. The first appearance of the word genetics in a published work. William Bateson was the President for this conference, he had coined the term genetics in 1905, but publically introduced the term for the first time during his opening address of July 31st 1906: 'Like other new crafts, we have been compelled to adopt a terminology, which, if somewhat deterrent to the novice, is so necessary a tool to the craftsman that it must be endured. But though these attributes of scientific activity are in evidence, the science itself is still nameless, and we can only describe our pursuit by cumbrous and often misleading periphrasis. To meet this difficulty I suggest for the consideration of this Congress the term Genetics, which sufficiently indicates that our labours are devoted to the elucidation of the phenomena of heredity and variation: in other words, to the physiology of Descent, with implied bearing on the theoretical problems of the evolutionist and the systematist, and application to the practical problems of breeders, whether of animals or plants. After more or less undirected wanderings we have thus a definited aim in view.' A good solid example of this landmark publication. Scarce. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 6.75 x 9.75 inches (16.5 x 25 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: 486
