[n.p.]: [Roy A. Squires], 1974. [First Edition]. An eight-page, long poem, printed from handset types, upon fine papers, handsewn, in an edition of only 218 copies.Roy A. Squires was an old-school practioner of the art/craft of typesetting, every letter/spacing, set and printed by hand. Glenn Lord saved some of Howard's best, unpublished poetry to be printed by Squires. As new.

This early work consists of "Apology," a lengthy introduction to the poems: "Address to the Worms," Three Men in One Room," "Excuse in Autumn,"Oh Soul be Changed Into Little Water Drops," "Brookside Reverie," "Of Consolations Through Murder." The total edition printed was 185 copies, this is one of 15 copies, each containing an original manuscript leaf, laid-in. The manuscript leaf is taken from the poem,"Three Men in One Room." The book is signed by both the author, and artist Helen Kapp. It is also vellum-spine, bound, and the original onion skin d.j., is present, even though it was meant to be discarded upon purchase. Some wear to top-edge boards, else a very good copy. Rare.

Prairie City, Illinois: The Decker Press, 1950. [First Edition]. The author's first book includes Crazy Horse, Custer, Cochise, and Billy The Kid, as subjects of his poetry. Brennan was a poet before fictioneer, and remained a poet up until his death. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed from the author, and also signed by the author's wife Doris Phildrick, who was also a poet, "To our friend R. Dixon Smith. December 6, 1986." The Decker Press was the private press of James A. Decker, which specialized in printing poetry. A Fine-Very Fine copy, in like d.j.

Sixty-eight pages of poetry, the last book published under the author's supervision, as he okay'd more than 30 pages of page proofs before he died. The publication that launched the Private Press of Roy A. Squires, although this book was printed by both Squires and his friend, Clyde Beck, upon whose urging the press was founded. One of only 175 copies bound with cloth spine, over boards. A very fine copy, issued w/o d.j..

Sauk City,: Arkham House, 1950. [First Edition]. A collection of forty-seven macabre themed poems, originally published in various journals and magazines, including Weird Tales, Wings, The Arkham Sampler, and others. One of the included poems, 'The Ballad of the Jabberwock' won the Stephen Vincent Benet award in 1946. Werewolves, Dragons, Witches, Kelpies, Fauns, Centaurs, are only a smattering of the mythical and supernatural subjects explored. Readily approachable, the majority of poems are only a page in length. Drake was a popular Weird Tales poet with more appearances in WEIRD TALES than Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, or H.P. Lovecraft. With so few copies printed, [553 copies]the book is a legendary Arkham House rarity, with only half the edition run offered to the public. Edition limited to 200 copies, most, but not all, were signed by the author. Printed upon Chroma ivory paper, covers of Mi-Teintes Tobacco, from handset American Uncial types. A fine copy.

[Glendale, CA.]: [Roy A. Squires], 1971. First Printing. Although not credited, this was the 16th booklet printed by Roy A. Squires, by hand from handset types, handsewn with silk thread. Colophon states 180 numbered copies, this is copy 48.. Handsomely printed with decorated initials. The private press of Roy A. Squires introduced fine printing to the fantasy & SF field. A diminuitive dip where the silk-tie, slightly pinched the paper.The author's widow, Carolyn, was still alive, although had remarried and taken the name Wakefield, and the copyright is in that name. Fine.

[Glendale, CA.]: (Roy A. Squires), (1964). First Thus. Printed in a total edition of 450 copies including variants, this is one of approximately 200 of "the ordinary edition." A handsome printing of this early, popular poem of Smith's. The author thought so highly of this poem that it appeared as the first poem in his first book, THE STAR-TREADER, in 1912.

Lakeport, Calif.: The Futile Press, 1937. [First edition, second state]. The Futile Press, founded by the Beck brothers, Groo and Claire later assisted by Clyde Beck, were young F & SF zealots, who, with their small handpress printed H.P. Lovecraft's: Notes & Commonplace Book, this booklet by Clark Ashton Smith, and had plans for future publications including Clark Ashton Smith'sThe Jasmine Girdle. Friends with Robert H. Barlow, there developed some bad blood between such notables as Clark Ashton Smith, and other fantasy field personalities, with Barlow and the Beck brothers's association with Barlow, and projects were shelved. With the last surviving brother, Groo, Roy A. Squires purchased The Futile Press's remaining papers and discovered that there were loose sheets ot NERO enough to complete 13 complete books. Printed by the esteemed, Carroll Coleman, at The Prairie Press. Another book of poems for Derleth's male lover, "Mara." [400 copies printed]. Signed, inscribed to Roy A. Squires. A fine copy. Very slight aging of d.j., spine.

New York: Author's Edition, 1923. [First Edition]. H.P. Lovecraft helped edit this book of poetry and contributed a 4-1/2 page "Biographical & Critical Preface" comprising over 2000 words, and additionally six poems dedicated to Jonathan E. Hoag, celebrating from his 87th to his 92nd birthdays. Although not written by Lovecraft this is an important addition to a Lovecraft library as his first appearance in hardcovers, a book he helped edit, and his more than 2000 word introduction on Hoag speaks of HPL's own views on poetry. There are additional tributes to Hoag from Winifrid Virginia Jackson, James F. Morton, Arthur H. Goodenough and others. The book is inscribed and signed in a florid hand, by Jonathan E. Hoag, dated July 20, 1923." Hoag lived into his 96th year, passing away in 1927. The gilt on the spine is dulled but readable. The book shows a little wear commensurate with age, and is signed by two additional amateurs of the time. A v.g.- copy.

Sauk City: Arkham House, 1971. [First edition]. Submitted to Arkham House in 1949, SELECTED POEMS was a career-spanning selection by Smith himself, with many early poems revised or rewritten, including his epic THE HASHISH-EATER which is here presented in its final version (personally, I prefer it's first version as presented in EBONY & CRYSTAL, in 1922). Smith considered SELECTED POEMS his greatest book because he first and foremost thought of himself as a poet. Unfortunately the delays in publication due to economic concerns of such a hefty volume of poetry, then additional frictions between Derleth and Carolyn Smiththe author's wife, Smith did not live to see its eventual appearance in print. Over 500 poems. This is an exceptional copy, very fine, unread with white paper and just a few tiny rubs to d.j. A lovely copy!

Auburn, CA: Auburn Journal, 1922. A love-sonnet, written in the flowing, graceful hand of twenty-five year old poet, Clark Ashton Smith. Presented in a Roy A. Squires binder-folder, with hand-printed title-page Folded for mailing (no doubt to his poet-friend, Samuel Loveman) with a closed split of approximately 1-1/4". Holographic CAS material is virtually unobtainable nowadays. Very good condition.

Bradbury and Squires were life-time buddies, and Bradbury would graciously allow Squires to print his poetry & plays for next to nothing. 400 numbered copies, this is copy 57. Handsomely printed upon Nideggen mouldmade paper. Fine.
