Description:
1 page handwritten protocol (in Sherwin's hand) of the game Fischer – Sherwin in the 9th round of the 15th US Chess Championship in New York on December 29th. 1962. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/4") original score signed by Fischer.

This was Robert Fischer's fifth win of the title, and this tournament also served as the Zonal Tournament.

Fischer, Reshevsky and Evans all lost their first round games. This was Fischer's first loss in a US Championship. This would require him to play catch-up to Arthur Bisguier, who held the lead until round 9, when they were tied at 6.5 points. They both drew in round 10 and had to face each other in the final round, where Fischer won to take the title, and Bisguier took second place.

Tying for third were Reshevsky, Evans and Addison. This required that they meet in a playoff to decide the third spot in the Amsterdam Interzonal (1964). Reshevsky defeated both opponents 1.5/2 to earn the spot.

Bisguier, having finished second, was entitled to go to the Interzonal. However,… Read More

16 pages with photographs and tables. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial stapled wrappers. Signed by all the contestants. First edition.
Ten grandmasters were invited to compete against six top Swiss masters, including the Swiss champion, at Zurich's KongreĂźhaus from May 18th to June 8th, 1959. Among the grandmasters invited were Mikhail Tal and Paul Keres from the Soviet Union, Bobby Fischer from the United States, Svetozar Gligoric from Yugoslavia, Bent Larsen from Denmark, Wolfgang Unzicker from Germany, and Fridrik Olafsson from Iceland, a number of these participating in the world candidates tournament the same year. Although Tal viewed the tournament as a lesser event, it turned out to be closer than he would have expected. Although he easily defeated five of the six Swiss players, Edwin Bhend dealt the future world champion a fatal blow in the first round. After dispatching his countrymen later in the tournament, Tal felt in fine form, but then lost again, this… Read More

[iv]+203 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition.
Fianchetto chess is here to stay! With the tremendous advance in 'hypermodern' theory during recent years, no player wishing to hold his own in competitive play can afford to ignore the new techniques which are now available.
In assembling these 200 traps, the author has made a deep study of systems used by the great original thinkers of the present day -Tal, Fisher, Larsen and Penrose. Sparks can normally be expected to fly when players like these sit down at the board, and new snares and pitfalls for the unwary are constantly being revealed in their games. One typical instance is the snare that cost Tal his game against Penrose in the 1960 Chess Olympics at Leipzig (and which incidentally was the only game lost by any Soviet player in the whole tournament!). This sensational encounter involving the first defeat of a reigning world… Read More
