Together with Rice's later books, this work contributed significantly to the rise of the carillon art in America. Our copy is SIGNED BY RICE, with a quote from Walter Damrosch written in Rice's hand: "Carillon music, the revival of a lovely Medieval art." The book is in near Very Good condition. Stoke-upon-Trent: Sprague & Co., 1889. After an engraved title page and xii pages, there are 94 pages of text interspersed with 185 full page plates showing the rubbings taken from the bells. The book has a cloth spine with paper over boards. A massive effort, this huge book rarely has held through the years. This copy is complete but the front cover is detached and some pages are loose. The covers show edge wear. An extremely rare book to be found in any condition, this was a wonderful contribution to the "County Bell Books" produced by those dedicated bell enthusiasts in 19th century England. Well-written, authoritative, one of the best books in bell literature. Also includes an extensive bibliography on bells. This copy has some pencilled notes by a former owner, along with his name, on the front free endpaper. Occasional foxing (browning) but not very serious. The spine title has been rubbed - it is readable but quite faint. Otherwise the book is tight and clean within and very usable.. First Edition. Cloth.
