Interview with Benjamin Griffin of The Dancing Admiral

When did you get started in bookselling?
I became a professional bookseller in 1999 when I joined the staff of Bauman Rare Books, in Philadelphia, where I worked for two years.
What drew you to bookselling?
There was never a time when I wasn't drawn to books, if not to selling them. As a toddler I used to go around with a book in my hands, yelling at my parents to "weed! Weed!" (that is, Read).
What are your specialties as a dealer?
I principally have scholarly books, literature, criticism, philosophy.
What's the most amazing book you've ever sold?
I once helped to sell, that is I did the cataloging, a Beethoven manuscript, a musical score. I also sold a copy of D. H. Lawrence's Letters, which was owned by T. S. Eliot, and had Eliot's annotations, which were highly personal.
What is your favorite part of being a bookseller?
What is your favorite bookshop (other than your own)?
Moe's, in Berkeley. The late lamented Serendipity, also in Berkeley.
