By Lucius (Lutz), Samuel.

Gedruckt bey Christoph Saur, Germantown, [PA]: ., 1770. pp. 303, [1], with errors in pagination. Small 8vo. 170 mm. Original full leather binding, without clasps. Samuel Lutz (or Lucius) (1674-1750) was one of the most important representatives of early pietism in Switzerland. Lutz at first turned his attention to mathematics, the classics, and Hebrew; then to Church discipline, and finally left all these to devote himself exclusively to the study of Scripture, and the works of the fathers and reformers, especially Luther. German pietism was then beginning to take root in Switzerland. Accused of Pietism, he carried a taint that, dispite his reputation for learning and eloquence, defeated most attempts to secure important posts. Finally, in 1726 he was appointed pastor of Amfoldingen, and in 1738 he removed to Diessbach. His collected works were published under the title Wohlriechender Strauss. Evans 11706; GLP/USA 383.
