The Religious Tract Society, 1862. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Kronheim prints. A selection of short tales and poems for Victorian children. Issued as an annual, this particular edition is in the small format - in 1868-9 the size was increased from 12 mo to 8 vo. Contains two colour Kronheim engravings, printed no doubt using the Baxter process with zinc blocks. In addition there are several monochrome full and part page illustrations. Half leather binding in dark brown with gilt lettering to spine with marbled papers. Plain endpapers. 15x9.5 cm.. 380pp. Corners, top/tail and edges worn. All plates have tissue guards. Plain black endpapers. Includes a catalogue of other Ward Lock books. There are 12 [including frontispiece] wood engraving plates, numerous other head and tail pieces and a fold out map. Cream cloth covered boards with colour illustration to front and backstrip with gilt titling. TEG. Corners and top/tail of backstrip slightly bumped, but cover clean and bright. Front and rear free endpapers have offset browning. Side edge of text block has some brown spots but inside is clean and fresh. Regarded by many as his finest work this is a collection of Norwegian fairy tales / folklore re-told. Top & bottom of backstrip is bumped. Slight sunning along the bottom front cover edge leading into the backstrip where the bottom in ch or so is sunned. Fabulous illustrated front and rear end papers; neatly hand written previous owner name on ffep. Slight offset staining to endpapers, most likely due to a previous dustjacket. One text page [26] is facsimile replacement. Grubbiness and chipping to some pages. One text page has archival tape repair, one text page is creased and one text page has corner missing. Henry Mayer's illustrations are charming and the story is very entertaining. Mayer did not publish many children's books. A German, working mostly in the US, he was better known as a political cartoonist.

Unfolds from a flat book to present a 360 degree carousel with 6 different pop-up stages telling the story of Sleeping Beauty / Dornröschen. Each stage has five levels of depth providing the peepshow effect. It was created by the Italian illustrator and stage designer Mario Zampini and the influence of his stage background is evident. Zampini was responsible for several of these carousel pop-up books which were published in German as Krenn's Theater Albums and in Italian as Libroteatro Hoepli. Titles in the series included Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Ali Baba [in German and / or Italian]. Illustrated paper covered boards over blue cloth backstrip. 23x26 cm. Corners / edges worn, backstrip faded. Clasp to hold the carousel open is part missing and therefore ineffective. The bottom of the blue stage border in the last scene has been replaced with plain blue paper. There should be a small loose pamphlet containing the story - this is missing. Otherwise the images and cut outs are in very good condition.
