Description:
N.Y., Whittlesey House/McGraw-Hill [1934]. First Edition. Hard Cover. 'First Edition.' 148 p.; 23.5 cm. 'This book is the outgrowth of a single essay, first printed in The American Spectator. The late Ring Lardner had been hammering away at the suggestiveness of our popular song lyrics for a long time, but too often letting his honest indignation get the better of his sense of humor. Most of our smutty song texts can be more effectively spoofed than viewed with alarm. "The popular song has become a most revealing index to American life in general. It sums up the ethics, the habits, the slang, the intimate character of every generation" Stock# 37,141. Vg, a few marginal stains; top edge & spine of dj faded from the original pink.

NY, Macmillan, MDCCCC [1900]. Born Agnes/Nesta Shakespear Higginson in Antrim in 1864 or '65, the poetess married Walter Claremont Skrine on 5 June 1895 and went with him to ranch in Alberta, Canada (cf. Burke's Landed Gentry, 1972). There she wrote poems that recalled the musical language of the people among whom she grew up and longing for the Ireland she had left behind (the last poem in the collection is called "Back to Ireland"). The poems were immediately taken up as popular ballads, set to music, anthologized. Hard Cover. x, 61 pages. This is a very good copy in paper boards. Stock#NS0035.
