Augusta, ME: Stevens & Sayward, Printers to the State, 1865. 14.5 x 22.7 cm. At the start of the last year of the Civil War, Governor Samuel Cony (1811-1870) who was elected Governor in 1863, gave this speech. Like his predecessors, he enthusiastically and very capably supported prosecution of the War and preservation of the Union. In this address he notes that bounties paid enlistees in the Army are causing the State to gain heavy debt; he talks about draft dodgers, and one brutal murder. He notes that after three years of war the armies of the Republic have lacked nothing for success but competent leaders, but praises Grant, Sherman, Sheridan and Thomas, and also Farragut and Winslow, who commanded USS Kearsarge when she sank CSS Alabama off Cherbourg, France. Report from Boston Herald of a New Hampshire girl who received a bundle of dry goods, and was led to a lodging with ""payment"" of sleeping with a soldier. She refused, but soon was charged with stealing the dry goods. By telegraph from New York: Gens. Sheridan's and Canby's departments say 10,000 of Kirby Smith's forces were paroled and 90 pieces of artillery and 20,000 stand of arms surrendered. Kirby Smith (Confederate General, 1824-1893) has taken refuge in Mexico. Trade in cotton was recognized by Maximillian, and about $2 million worth was carried into Mexico through the connivance of Mexican authorities. Originally published in 1832, this small volume contains a Publisher's Preface dated Nov. 27, 1860, and asks reader, in order for text to be applicable to 1860, to read ""Secession"" for ""Nullification"". This is a rare little volume, dealing with States' rights, particularly the situation in South Carolina during the presidential election of 1832. South Carolina objected to the high protective tariffs put into effect by Northerners, and threatened to secede from the Union. In spite of the fact that the South had elected Andrew Jackson President in 1828, now South Carolina felt he wasn't doing enough to help the South, as it suffered through its own recession. Blistering exchange of letters in this issue between General Benjamin Butler and Publisher Horace Greeley takes up about five long columns of type.
