Description:
Orig. pub. New York 1888. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2015. (ii), xvi, 344 pp., map, index In his trilogy about the men who settled the Old Southwest, the author develops the thesis that these men, under the leadership of John Sevier, Isaac Shelby, and James Robertson, not only planted a civilization beyond the Alleghenies but exerted an important influence in shaping the ultimate destinies of this country. Two of these men, Sevier and Shelby, during the Revolution helped thwart the British plan to envelop and crush the Southern Colonies and then helped turn the tide of the Revolution at the Battle of King's Mountain. Acting together after the Revolution, the three men frustrated Spain's design to weaken the Union by creating a separate republic between the Allegheny Mountains and the Mississippi River. Had that plan been successful, it would have kept the vast region beyond the Mississippi a Spanish province. This work is the third and concluding volume of Gilmore's trilogy about… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Salisbury, NC, 1801. Reprinted 1976. Print on Demand Edition 2011. viii, 76 pp., new intro., new index James Hall was an eminent Presbyterian clergyman, educator, and patriot who made a missionary journey in 1800-01 which laid the foundations of the Presbyterian Church in Mississippi. This first history of the Mississippi Territory was a by-product of Hall's journey down the perilous Natchez Trace to minister to the scattered Presbyterian congregations in the area. More an intelligent and informed historical sketch than an actual history, he describes the country and its boundaries, its form of government, and discusses such topics as the soil, climate, produce, manners and customs, population, and trade and commerce. This volume retains significance as a rare historical document and an eyewitness account.

Orig. pub. Greenville 1897. Reprinted 1959, 1962, 1966, 1971, 1977. Print on Demand Edition 2010. (viii), iv, 364, viii, 373-396, illus., maps Upper South Carolinians who risked their lives and fortunes in the Revolutionary War faced neighbors who had remained loyal to the Crown and hostile Cherokee Indians. The British were instrumental in stirring up the Cherokees, who occupied land now comprising Greenville, Anderson, Pickens, and Oconee counties. A major campaign against the Indians was fought by upper South Carolinians, Georgians, western North Carolinians, and Tennesseans within the framework of the Revolution. These and many other facts of the early history of the South Carolina Upcountry are detailed in this classic work on the Colonial period and Revolutionary War campaigns in the Upcountry. The book covers the Upper South Carolina governmental organization at the beginning of the Revolution and goes on to detail the battles in the region. Chapters are devoted to the battles of Cowpens,… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Atlanta 1924. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2009. 200 pp., map Using all the early land grants and other records of the state, McLendon, who was secretary of state in Georgia at the time he wrote this book, put together a valuable study of Georgia's land disposition history dealing specifically with the lands acquired from the Creek and Cherokee Indians and the Georgia western lands in largely what is now Alabama and Mississippi. He discusses the headright and land lottery counties. Particular emphasis, however, is on the Yazoo Land Fraud, a massive fraud perpetrated by several Georgia governors and the state legislature from 1795-1803 by selling large tracts of land to insiders at absurdly low prices. Major companies involved in this were the Georgia Land Company, the Georgia Mississippi Company, the Upper Mississippi Company, and the Tennessee Company. Earlier companies involved were the South Carolina Yazoo Company, the Virginia Yazoo Company, and the Tennessee Yazoo Company.… Read More

Description:
Orig. pub. Cincinnati 1881. Reprinted 1967, 1973, 1982. Print on Demand Edition 2011. xv, 17-612 pp., index + illus., maps The Battle of King's Mountain, October 7, 1780, turned the tide of the Revolution in the South, bringing to an end many months of British occupation in the Carolinas and Georgia. Draper's classic account of this important battle includes early background events, notes of the life of British commander Patrick Ferguson, other upcountry skirmishes and battles, and finally a lengthy account of the battle itself. To write this definitive history of the battle, Draper sought out and interviewed witnesses and relatives of witnesses, and collected original letters, accounts of the battle, and other primary documents. Biographical information on the leaders and officers make this a valuable book for genealogists as considerable genealogical data was gathered from the records of Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia.

Description:
Orig. pub. Nashville 1858. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2010. (xii), 236 pp., frontis., new intro., map One of the most engaging and valuable of the first-hand books of Tennessee historical reminiscences, this narrative recounts the adventures of a pioneer, hunter, Indian fighter, and scout during the time from 1790 to 1820 as told by Joseph Bishop to the author. Written in a very florid style, it nevertheless conveys the flavor of an old pioneer's adventures and character. The late Tennessee State Historian Stanley F. Horn, in a special introduction written for this reprint edition, called it "an impressive reflection of the raw reality of pioneer life in Tennessee," and welcomed the reprint edition which will make it more readily accessible to "the many who will be entertained and enlightened by it."

Orig. pub. Chattanooga and Bristol 1918-1933. Reprinted 1974. Print on Demand Edition 2012. Six volumes, 2,162 pp., illus. Available by individual volume. Begun in 1918 and not completed until 1933, Notable Southern Families is a collection of family histories touching upon many thousands of people of English, Scotch-Irish, and Huguenot stock, the three major groups of settlers in the Southern states, who emigrated first into Virginia, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee and then throughout the South. In almost every instance family lines begin with the earliest settlers in America and are brought down to the dates of publication. The compilers developed the lines after careful consideration of hundreds of histories, court records, family documents, family Bibles, and family authorities. The Colonial period, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War record of each family is set forth succinctly. Each genealogy is meticulously developed giving all names in both collateral and direct lines of… Read More
