Sir Roger Mortimer was one of the most experienced and able military men of his time, but he was arrested for his part in a rebellion against King Edward II and imprisoned in the Tower of London. Incredibly, he managed to escape after arranging to drug the guards. He fled to France with the Queen, Isabella, and then returned with an army and deposed the King who was in turn murdered. Mortimer was said to have been brutal, yet he was also admired for his intelligence, imagination, and passion.
