Born Elsie Bierbower, the author became a vaudeville star by age eleven, and a star on Broadway and in London. One of the first American stars to entertain the troops in WWI and earned the nickname "The Sweetheart of the E.E.F.". Elsie wrote several popular songs, including theme music "Paramount on Parade", "Oh Give Me Time for Tenderness" for the film "Dark Victory" and collaborating on songs with both Jerome Kern and Irving Berlin. She wrote a couple of autobiographies and was a successful screenwriter, co-writing the script & songs for "Madam Satan" and wrote dialogue for Cecil B. DeMille's "Squaw Man" and several other films.
