A full year of short stories to read to your little one. Most are one to two pages long, al with illustrations. A few have author accreditation, most do not. Edges and corners show their near 80 years of wear. Rear endpaper and any other pages that followed the last story are no longer present. Owner's name inside the front cover. A few pages have a little minor wrinkling at the edge. A rare book.

Some of these are stand alone short stories, such as The Ransom of Red Chief by O. Henry, while others appear to be excerpts from larger works, such as Lewis Carroll's A Mad Tea Party. Some are international selections from Europe and Asia. Other authors include Louisa May Alcott, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ray Bradbury, James Thurber, Geoffrey Household, Oscar Wilde, Carl Sandburg, Isaac Asimov, Eleanor Estes, Rudyard Kipling, Washington Irving, and many more. Most of the stories have some illustrations. This book will ship at about three pounds. Excess shipping costs are included in the list price.

Usually, when I have a poor book, it is due to the cover and binding that has failed. This patterned green fabric shows some wear at the edges and corners and darkening over the spine, but really isn't that bad for the age. And there are no hinge splits, so the binding is still remarkably solid. It is the pages, where there are many torn pages, some repaired with tape and some not, and a scattering of stains throughout. This book was quite popular at the Hoquiam Public Library from May of 1929 to June of 1930 before it seems to have been retired. This book is quite rare.

A very simple learn-the-alphabet book. In it, the letters are turned into the illustrations of a word starting with each letter. For instance, the letter K turns into a Kite. And that takes up all of two facing pages. 26 letters means 52 pages. The book has been well used with some creases and bent corners, most significantly to the lower right front corner and many of the pages that follow. You can see some of this in the photo. All the pages are intact and unmarked.

A tie in to the Disney movie. Owner's name on the title page, twice, in pencil and crayon. The final page has lost its corners, the rest are clean and intact. Cover has a bit of wear, but not really bad for its age.

A compact little book with an embossed red fabric cover, coming apart at the top of the spine, both front and back. Contains seven illustrated short stories for children, each with a moral to teach. A number of inscriptions are found on the first few pages, the earliest of which documents a gifting in 1866 (see photo #5). An additional inscription documents the finding of this book in an attic in 1945.

I went to research the market for this book and found that there are many offered for sale out there, with many different appearances. Quite a few are being claimed as First Editions, which they clearly aren't, since they don't even look alike. Different cover designs, different dust jacket art. They can't all be firsts, and, in fact, none of them are. Grossett & Dunlap didn't do firsts often, if ever. They also didn't provide print counts, later publication dates, or anything else to tell you when a given copy was published. (This means that heirloom Wizard of Oz you have at home is not likely a first edition, either.) The original First Edition was printed in Berlin, in German, in 1923. The First American Edition was published in 1928 by Simon & Schuster. Therefore, this is not a first edition. Little wear. A thin book for the young reader. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Rather scarce.

A picture book in rhyme. Full color illustrations. Some signs of wear, including a 2.5 cm tear at the bottom of the binding. Saturday Night Fever for bugs.

Intended for the tween set (8-12), this amusing series can be enjoyed by older folks, too. The second of four in the Sam the Cat Mystery series. Sandy the cat food model is missing. Can Sam break the case? Very little wear, other than a slight curl to the cover. 133 pages.

Green fabric cover shows wear at the corners with the boards showing in a couple places. Pre-Primer 1 in the series. A stamp from the Klamath Falls School District on the title page and inside the rear cover, along with a checkout slip pocket. Appears to be a paperback book that was rebound in hardback for the library. Pages are tight and intact, with no marks and some scattered mild stains. Illustrations are all in color. A rare book.

Set in 1929, three siblings find a dead body washed up on shore, which results in getting drawn into the alcohol smuggling world. Little wear, a couple pages have small bent corners, as does the lower right front of the cover. 252 pages.

No dust jacket. Red boards with black print on front and spine; shows very little wear. This is a rather unique book, containing five stories at the juvenile level, simultaneously presented in four languages. Each pair of pages provide the same passage in English, French, German and Spanish. Many illustrations in black and white. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. I find very few copies of this book on the market. Seems quite rare.
