A collection of essays about the unique American condition. Although published 48 years ago, many of the essays are as topical today as they were then. For instance, this is the opening sentence of one very short essay: "One of the many extraordinary aspects of American life is the frequency with which people shoot people." And today, it is even worse. I no longer remember the title of the course I took that had me read this book, but many of the essays still occupy prominent places in my mind.Book is well worn, with the cover color rubbed significantly and creases and folds at the corners. The inner pages are clean and clear, lacking notes, highlighting or underlining. Illustrated throughout, black and white.

Lightly worn for a book from the last year of the 19th century. From the original manuscript, which I gather was held in England until 1897, at which point it was returned to Massachusetts. "With a Report on the Proceedings Incident to the Return of the Manuscript to Massachusetts." Complete with appendix and index. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked, and still rather bright after 123 years. A nice copy. Will ship at about four pounds. Excess shipping and packaging costs are included in the list price.

Sieghold, published in 1915 (20 pp.), including two tickets to Mission San Juan Capistrano (date unknown) and a brochure about the Franciscan Missions along El Camino Real (this is the only booklet showing significant wear to the cover); Trees, Shrubs and Flowers of the Redwood Region by Willis L. Jepson, published in 1950 (16 pp.); Monterey Trails by Lucia Shepardson, published in 1935 (38 pp.); On the Old Calaveras Road by Mary Goodrich, published in 1929 (17 pp.); and California Speaking (A Handbook of California History) by Maria Antonia Field, published in 1934 (19 pp.).
All of these publications are quite rare and some command rather high prices. I was unable to find any copies of Old Mission Tales in my search, so this might be the rarest of the bunch. The others have asking… Read More

A collection of 14 pamphlets, brochures and booklets relating to aspects of California history. I have been able to find most of these items offered for sale online, and if you were to buy the cheapest ones out there, you would end up paying $170 or more and still not have them all. I think my price is a bargain. The items included are as follows:
The Story Told by a Fallen Redwood: by Emanuel Fritz. 1949, 8 pages, very little wear. Published by Save-the-Redwoods League (STRL). Muir Woods: Two copies, 1954 and 1957. Both are bifold sheets equivalent to six pages. On the 1954 edition, the first fold has failed. The 1957 edition has very little wear. Published by the National Park Service. A Living Link in History: by John C. Merriam. 1950, 8 pages, little wear. Published by STRL. Motorland, Volume LXXV, No. 3: September 1954, 28 pages. No dust jacket. Inscription inside front cover. No other markings. Filled with black and white drawings accompanied by historical test of the events of the American Civil War. Material taken mostly from the files of Harper's Weekly and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper'. A relatively rare book, it seems.

Former library book. Little wear. Other than the usual library markings, the pages are clean, tight and intact. Four chapters about slavery, war, freedom and the aftermath. Probably about a third-grade reading level. Probably one of those books the governors of Texas and Florida don't want their white school children feeling "uncomfortable" about.

First edition. No dust jacket. Green fabric covered boards with two-color stamped decoration and print on the front and spine. Fabric over the spine is a bit faded and shows a little mild wear at the top and bottom. The pages are clean and tight. and there is one hinge split in the rear (see photo #5), showing binding fabric, just ahead of the endpaper. The rear free endpaper is half loose. The book contains some illustrations. A rather scarce book.
