Vol. 76/77 is part of the Series entitled The Last Day published from 1913 to 1921 in Leipzig by publisher Kurt Wolff and his editors Franz Werfel and Max Brod. The series was to become a forum for Expressionist literature.

Very Good Copy of second German edition of Heinrich Heine's satirical novella with original boards and a cover drawing by Jules Pascin, important Bulgarian-born Expressionist painter with more than 20 illustrations by Pascin. In glassine cover with some soiling on cover. Bright and clean inside. Born Julius Mordechai Pincas, Jules PASCIN (1885-1930), was one of the most important artists of the École de Paris. He arrived in France in 1905, year of the birth of Fauvisme at the Salon d'Automne. He was Influenced by Fauvism and later by Cubism but mostly celebrated for his paintings of Montmartre life after dark. Among his models were his wife Hermine David and his mistress Lucy and prostitutes encountered in bordellos. He exhibited his works regularly at the Salon des Indépendants. He committed suicide en 1930. The day of his death, the Parisian Art Galleries closed as a sign of mourning.

Very good copy of original 1909 edition of Austrian writer Peter Altenberg's Prose short sketches which became known as Viennese 'Kaffeehausliterat'. Texts describe social life in turn-of-the-century Vienna. No wear to original fabric cover. Some soiling to bottom corner of spine. Otherwise no edge wear or rubbing. Inside intasct and clean.

Text displays typography designed by with elegant hieratic, symbolic, decorative design combining with gothic elements with fin de siècle arts and crafts design by Melchior Lechter, (1865–1937) noted German book designer and painter closely connected with Stefan George's circle. Very Good copy of 1944 Swiss Edition of Novella in Three Parts originally published to great acclaim by the Austrian novelist Robert Musil in 1924. Drei Frauen consists of three long stories, "Grigia," "The Portuguese Lady," and "Tonka." The work was published a few years prior to Robert Musil's twentieth-century masterpiece The Man Without Qualities. Beloved by writers Thomas Mann and Hermann Broch, Musil was several times nominated for a Nobel Prize before his death in 1942. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. - Text in German language. First Edition of Hofmannsthal's 1905 first drama in five acts, an adaptation of Thomas Otway's 1682 English drama Venice Preserved, in which he made use of George's physical and intellectual traits, as a model for his characters. Many critics have commented that the 1905 drama Das gerettete Venedig not only has "homosexual undertones, " but that the relationship of Pierre and Jaffier, the two main characters, is a direct mirroring of the conflict between George and Hofmannsthal. Work is dedicated to Stefan George, "In Bewinderung und Freudnschaft." Very slight soiling to bottom left corner of front wrap, bottom of spine crimped, pages clean and bright.233 pp.

Very rare copy in fine condition of original 1907 German Edition of poet, novelist and essayist Hans Bethge's The Chinese Flute (Die Chinesischen Flote). This uncut first edition of the work numbered 41 on papier de chine (chinapapier) was one of only 100 copies published in Leipzig by InseIverlag. The work conveys the essence of Chinese poetry of the Tang dynasty in German. Seven of Its poems became the inspiration for Gustav Mahler's Das Lied Von Der Erde (which the composer worked on from 1907 to 1910). Provenance: From the Henry Church Collection. Festival in German rhymes is a festival by Gerhart Hauptmann which premiered on May 31, 1913 to commemorate the centenary of Breslau and the Napoleonic Wars of Liberation. The play was discontinued on 18 June 1913 after eleven performances at the request of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Prussia (1882-1951) who urged the Breslau Magistrate to remove the festival from the repertoire.

Very good 1915 first edition of Thomas Mann's Essay in German on Frederick the Great of Prussia. Written at the outbreak of World War I between September and December 1914, the Essay is an indirect expression of scepticism about German war politics at the time. Based on notes for a novel he planned to write about Frederick the Great nearly a decade before, the Essay looks back on German politics in the mid-18th century and revisits the life and deeds of Frederick the Great while shedding light on contemporary events. No edgewear but slight foxing to cover boards. Interior flawless.

1903 Edition of Collected Poems of German-Jewish Poet and Dramatist (1869 – 1948) who was a close collaborator of Sefan George. He also translated from French, English, Italian, Hebrew, Latin and Middle High German into German and was a member of the Munich Cosmic Circle. He emigrated to Switzerland in 1933, to Italty in 1934 and then to New Zealand in 1938 where he died in 1948.
