And rumour has it that the character played by Kate Winslet, Hanna Schmitz, in the film The Reader. was also based on Koch. Popular creature. Ilse Koch was the wife of Karl-Otto Koch, commandant of the Nazi concentration camps Buchenwald and Majdanek. In 1947, she became one of the first prominent Nazis tried by the U.S. military - sentenced to life in prison. Koch hanged herself at Aichach women's prison in September 1967 at age 60.
