The British release of Andy Warhol's Flesh was delayed after it was seized by the police for obscenity. Vaughan Films produced two entirely different ephemeral books for Flesh. One was a promotional book, for which OCLC cites three copies (Yale, British Library, Oxford). The OCLC also lists another book, also 28 cm., and also very scarce (two copies: Whitney Museum, National Gallery of Australia), but with an entirely different cover title.

Fine.Extremely rare original photo from, arguably, Warhol's first feature narrative film, which was shot on a totally improvised basis during a weekend on Fire Island. Joseph Campbell plays an older male hustler; in this shot, he is sitting next to Chuck Wein, a middle-aged guy who has called the "Dial-a-Hustler" phone service for a companion.

Rare photo of Dallesandro, Forth, and Warhol at the German premiere of the film, in Munich, in front of a massive poster of Joe.

A long diagonal crease runs down the right side, causing a one-inch (2.5 cm.) tear at top, reinforced with archival paper. Good+. An extremely scarce photo from Andy Warhol's feature film, shot on Fire Island, about the "Dial A Hustler" service. Here is an image of a shirtless Paul America in the lead role of the young hustler as he looks in the mirror.

This play by Eduardo Cortes was an all-male reimagining of Clair Booth Luce's THE WOMEN. It gets discussed in Michael Schiavi's CELLULOID ACTIVIST: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF VITO RUSSO, where a Russo review of it gets quoted: ""I am tired of hearing about how all gays are bitchy queens. I resent being represented as something I'm not"" (p. 109).

One of Brian De Palma's earliest movies, this one a collaboration with Robert Fiore and Bruce Rubin. The film records a performance of The Performance Group's stage play of the same name, an adaptation of The Bacchae. Poster for the New York debut of the Cockettes and Sylvester, a legendary fiasco. The Cockettes were a queer avant-garde hippie theatre troupe that formed in the fall of 1969 in San Francisco.
"In November 1971, the Cockettes were booked for performances at the Anderson Theater in New York City. The venue had no sound or lighting systems and needed a curtain. The stage was also twice the size of the Cockettes' usual one, so all the sets had to be rebuilt from scratch in six days. They opened with 'Tinsel Tarts In a Hot Coma', a send-up of films about Broadway in the 1930s. According to accounts of the time, 'Everybody who was anybody' came to the Cockettes' New York opening, including such celebrities as John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Liza Minnelli, Allen Ginsberg, Anthony Perkins, Truman Capote, Gore Vidal and Angela Lansbury. Np. No binding. Just About Fine. [San Francisco]: Community Pride, 1985. Vintage original 24 x 36" (61 x 91.5 cm.) pictorial map / poster. Unfolded, minor crimping at bottom left corner, some minor additional wear in a few places at edges, but just about fine with vibrant colors.
A vibrant portrayal of San Francisco's Castro neighborhood at a time of great social activism but also at a moment when the LGBTQ community was being devastated by the AIDS epidemic. The map spotlights many of the establishments which catered to the gay community.
We are treated to an oblique perspective of the neighborhood. Structuring the view is an orthogonal grid of blue lines representing the area's main streets. In the spaces created between these streets we find an abundance of imagery depicting life -- and especially nightlife -- in the district. Scarce poster documenting a stage performance given by Divine in a Johannesburg, South Africa night spot known as Zipps. Pieces of tape were affixed on the back in the four corners, causing some minor stains in those corners, poster otherwise unfolded and perfect, hence NEAR FINE.

Paper filing label across spine, NEAR FINE.Second revision draft script of this early form of an adaptation by Gore Vidal to television of Lucian Truscott's novel. In its present state, the script would translate into a two-hour television film.Truscott's novel, set at West Point at the time of the Vietnam War, reportedly based it on fact. The completed film, when screened on television, dealt with homophobia (both external and internalized) and it was very strong stuff in the mid-1980s, at the height of the Reagan era. The film was clearly troubling to some contemporary critics, but it nonetheless was nominated for three Emmy Awards.A very interesting example of Vidal's work as a screenwriter, especially because of the film's LGBTQ subject matter.

Very scarce poster (the OCLC records no known copy) for a 1968 run of the first play written by and starring Andy Warhol superstar Jackie Curtis. This play had had its world premiere a year before, also at the Playwright's Workshop, and an entirely different poster was created for this 1968 revival. "Jackie Curtis was born in New York City to John Holder and Jenevive Uglialoro. She had one sibling, half-brother Timothy Holder, who is an openly gay Episcopal priest. Her parents divorced and she was mostly raised by her maternal grandmother. Her maternal grandmother was Ann Uglialoro, a well-known East Village bar owner known as Slugger Ann. The club opened September 30, 1980, and closed in 1988; however, it continued on through a variety of pop-up events which went on and continued into this century. Most of the posters from this period were created during the era of the AIDS crisis."The Saint was technically and creatively one of the best dance clubs of its era. The circular dance floor at 5,000 sq. ft (460 sq. m) was topped by a perforated planetarium dome 76 ft (23 m) in diameter and 38 ft (12 m) high. In addition to hiding the speakers, the dome served as a spectacular palette for the lighting effects, with a mirrored disco ball lowered into the space. The speaker cabinets were located on, and attached directly to, the outer surface of the dome, creating a very euphonic 'surround sound' effect. Jack Smith. No binding. Just About Fine. Jack Smith (filmmaker) [New York]: Artists Space, [1976]. Vintage original 17 1/2 x 22" (44.5 x 56 cm.) poster, unfolded, just about fine.
Documents a Jack Smith performance, which contained a barbed criticism of filmmaker/critic Jonas Mekas. Smith played a covetous trainer parading out a film actress, played by a toy penguin, for his own financial gain -- a supposed metaphor for his relationship with Jonas Mekas.
Though both underground sensations, as the story goes, Jack Smith felt that Mekas had drummed up controversy over Smith's Flaming Creatures, profiting from control of the print.
Although unsigned, this poster was clearly created by Smith, and hence constitutes a rare example of his graphic work.
