Fine in Fine DJ: Book shows binding square and secure; text clean. DJ unclipped; mylar-protected. As New. NOT a Remainder. NOT a Book-Club Edition. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 4to. Unpaginated (about 32pp. Illustrated by Louise August. Goldin smoothly blends her contemporary story, about a boy's fears of sleeping under the open roof of his family sukkah, with an explanation of the festival of Sukkot. Louise August's pictures are just the right side of scary. Ages 4-8. Hardback with DJ. Goldin uses the story of two siblings spending a night in the family sukkah -a small, temporary hut roofed with tree branches that is constructed during the Jewish fall harvest festival of Sukkot - as a vehicle to help explain the holiday. Daniel and his older sister help their parents to build and decorate the sukkah, and then share a family meal inside it. Afterwards, trying to settle down to sleep, the boy becomes nervously aware of night sounds and shapes, but is reassured by his sister's comparison of brightly shining stars and moon to the night light in his bedroom. Bold, full-and double-page linocuts, richly colored with oils and pastels, feature caricaturelike people, imaginary monsters, and a particularly expressive pet cat. The first page of black text, set against a peach and blue sky, is a bit difficult to read, but the volume as a whole is well designed and attractive. A page of information about Sukkot concludes the book. Because most young children can relate to Daniel's fear of the dark, the story will be appreciated by both general and Jewish audiences.

Santa Calls.

By William Joyce.

New York, NY Laura Geringer (HarperCollins), 1993. Hardcover First Edition; First Printing indicated. First Edition; First Printing indicated. Near Fine in Very Good DJ: Book shows light shelf-wear along the bottom edge; binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows indications of light use; faintly sunned at spine, but the titles thereon remain bold and clearly legible; tiny snag at the top of the rear hinge; very mild rubbing; price unclipped. A New book in a moderately used DJ. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. Large, oblong Quarto. Hardback with DJ. "Santa Calls" deserves to take a place among classic children's (age 2 - 104) Christmas books! I can't figure out the Kirkus review comment that this is somehow a take-off on "Polar Express" and "more style than substance." "Santa Calls" offers MORE than pretty illustrations (they are more like, art-deco "way-cool.") And the story explores, among other things, sibling rivalry, the earnest hopes of children to be accepted fully into family life, the importance of sometimes keeping secrets, and the potential of redemption in misguided kids (Whew! Sounds like a good dose of substance to me!) Best of all, the Mrs. Santa is NOT the stereotypical "Jonathan Winters in drag" sort of depiction. She is classy and stylish (what a coat and hat!) and has a noticeable tinge of self-confidence. THIS is the "Mrs. Claus" that *I* want to believe in! The end of the book consists of two letters -- one from the central girl character and another which is a response from the Big Guy himself. They appear to be the real things -- conveniently pasted into the back cover of the book! Nice way to get kids to appreciate the art of letter-writing at an early age. Do call on this book, you won't be disappointed.
