Description:
Aberdeen University Press, London, first edition, 1911. Cloth, folio, gilt devices on boards, top edge gilt, 36 cm,. xi pp, 924 columns. Approximately 8,000 entries. The scarce catalogue of a superb collection of literature on all aspects of philately. The nucleus of the collection was that formed by John Kerr Tiffany of St Louis, which the Earl of Crawford acquired in 1901. "Tiffany included in his collection all separate works, journals, retail and wholesale price-lists from the smallest to the largest, notices of dealers and societies, articles on stamp-collecting in non-philatelic magazines, works on postal history and music with philatelic or postal titles. In fact he made it his object to obtain every scrap of paper from a single leaf to the largest volume, which had any bearing whatever on philately and the Post Office in all languages and from every quarter of the globe." Crawford added substantially to Tiffany's collection and engaged E.D. Bacon to produce this catalogue, on… Read More

University Press of Virginia, Charlottesville, first edition, 1976. Cloth, gilt cover title, 8vo, 26 cm,. xviii, 409 pp, ills. From the preface: "It has been my purpose to give the reader not only accurate information about the books but also some knowledge of their structure and flavor so that it might be possible for him to form an idea of the archi tectural thought which surrounded Jefferson, who based his own architectural inspiration on them and who derived many of his architectural forms from them. Although architectural books and the architecture of the University of Virginia have been emphasized here, an emphasis peculiarly appropriate because of Jefferson's desire that the two should interact, the fine arts volumes also give us a glimpse of his background in painting and sculpture and, sometimes, a direct connection with his own collections. It has seemed best to let the books speak for themselves. After a transcription of the title page, a physical description of each book, and… Read More

Forum, Udine, first edition, 2003. Laminated illustrated wrappers with flaps, 8vo, 24 cm,. xiii, 528, [2] pp. Fro he introduction: "Il presente volume si suddivide in tre parti. Read More

Description:
Edinburgh University Press, Edinburgh, first edition, 1971. Cloth, 4to, 29 cm,. xii, 245 pp, 18 plates. The main part of this book is a catalogue of a private library collected in the first quarter of the seventeenth century, and as such gives not only a picture of William Drummond as a man of cultivation, a good classical scholar and an unusually able linguist, but also a valuable insight into the literary taste of the period of Shakespeare and Jonson ; for Orummond cannot be regarded as eccentric or especially scholarly-indeed it is his position as being representative of the educated man of his day that makes the study of his books particularly valuable. Dr MacDonald has prefaced his catalogue, the result of acute deductive work in respect of the books which no longer exist, with a lengthy and pertinent discussion of Drummond's life and interests, and of the book-reading and book-buying habits of the educated society of the time as revealed in this important collection. Oxford Bibliographical Society, Oxford, 1996. Cloth-backed boards, 8vo,. xcv, 358 pp. From the introduction: "The purpose of this book is twofold. First, to provide a catalogue of the books that are known to have survived from Cranmer's library after it was dispersed in 1553 (with their present locations, where known), and to suggest further books which may have belonged to him from the evidence of quotations and other references in his writings. And, secondly, to trace the history of his books after 1553 down to their present location, and, where there is evidence of pre-Cranmer provenance, to indicate where Cranmer may have obtained them. This is not, therefore, a study in detail of the books themselves or the use to which Cranmer put them, though the material presented here will, it is hoped, provide a starting point for such a study, for those working on particular aspects of his thought, work, and career."
