An interesting history of this fine printing firm, whose credits include the printing of The British Printer and The Printers' International Specimen exchange. Spine title: Raithby Lawrence, 1876-1976. Small paper library label on spine and traces of removed platic tape around this, otherwise Near Fine.

Trubner and Co., London, first edition thus, 1885. Half-parchment and decorated boards, small 4to,. xii, 113, [3] pp, ills. Depositio Cornuti Typographici" is described elsewhere as "A comical or mirthful play which can be performed, without any offence, at the reception and confirmation of a journeyman who has learned honestly the noble art of printing.." The Depositio was a form of initiation which the apprentice had to undergo on entering the printing trade in Germany during the 17th and 18th centuries. The contents include much information relative to the early Printers Guilds of Germany, and other interesting matter of typography, with a bibliography of books in which the Depositio is partially given or described. Neatly rebacked, boards and endpapers and untrimmed page edges smokestained, boards slightly worn, acquisition note on front free endpaper, contents otherwise Good.

Limited edition of 850 copies of which 250 were not for sale. 2 volumes, plain wrappers, 4to, 34 cm. xlix, 192, [2] pp plates + [193]-415, [3] pp. A valuable edition of Aldo Manuzio's dedications, prefaces and notes to the texts, with a 40-page introduction discussing his role as editor by the historian of Italian literature Carlo Dionisotti. In a 1980 review of another work, Anthony Grafton commented "the rich introduction by Carlo Dionisotti is by far the best study in existence of Aldo". Booklabel of the bibliophile A R A Hobson on the verso of the front free endpaper in each volume, spine of Volume I a trifle bumped, otherwise Near Fine in Near Fine dustwrappers with a little fingermarking to the front panels.

During the first twenty or thirty years in which the Registers were kept, ballads indeed made up the bulk of the entries; until 1640 they occupied perhaps greater space than books or plays. But from 1640 to 1655, thanks to civil war and restrictive laws, almost no ballads were registered at Stationers' Hall. A similar gap appears from 1656 (when some 165 ballads were entered) to 1675 (when some 175 were entered); and from 1676 to 1708/9 - the date at which the Registers were discontinued - ballad-entries were rarely made.
