Richmond, VA: William F. Ritchie, Public Printer, 1858. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather with black label to spine. Exterior shows wear and soiling in leather is frayed and peeling to the finish. Internal binding is good other than some minor pulling. Pages are lightly tone due to age and some foxing and spotting is present with the worst being the end pages. No signatures or bookplates, no handwriting or library markings present. Laws include several sections on slaves and ownership, an interesting section on what defines a militia (pages 33 - 37) stating it is to be organized to provide for the defense of the commonwealth with officers and regiments, brigades etc. This is the original publication from 1858, not a modern reprint.

Richmond, VA: Samuel Shepherd - Printer to Commonwealth, 1848. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Fair. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather. Exterior is quite worn in leather to spine is brittle with sections missing at the top and bottom, leather is cracked at both boards which are held on only by the binder string. Overall interior binding is good though pages 235 through 238 are protruding a bit and have some wiggle to them. Page 239 has a corner fold which has been straightened out. Paper is toned due to age and foxing is present throughout. Original owner signature is present on the front pastedown, front end page, and the gutter on page 119. The owner was R. S. Brown in the front end page shows the date of 1849.

Hardcover, original marbled paper cover boards half bound in leather. Exterior is in rough shape with both boards barely hanging on by just a single section of binder string that will easily break. Leather on spine is worn and cracked. The majority of the text pages are attached and secure but front end page is detached. This page has some handwriting, written lightly in pencil. The signature appears to read Major Charles Hunton(?) Brandwell(?), Thurman, Milford. The second end page contains an additional signature at the bottom which is written upside down along with an 1895 date. Hardcover, original marbled paper covered boards half bound in leather. Exterior shows moderate to heavy wear and leather is crusty. Leather hinges also cracked on both sides and spine edges are chipped. Interior hinges are cracking at boards but text pages are tight, nothing torn or loose. Paper is toned due to age and scattered foxing and spotting is present. Front pastedown shows original owners names stating this was a presentation to John Koonce (?) from a Thom G. Roofs (?) with an 1877 date. Some faded writing is also present on the front end page, no other handwriting found. This is the original edition of 1877, not a modern reprint.

Previous owners names are written in several areas, it appears as book was passed down from father to son with the front and rear pastedowns showing the name R. S. Brown - May 1886, in the first end page shows the name C. L. Brown. In addition, the original owner signed 'Brown" twice on the title page. No other handwriting found in the book. Rear pastedown show some peeling to the edges.

Exterior shows moderate to heavy wear and leather is brittle and worn with cracking present at exterior hinges and boards are loose and held on just by the binder string. The leather on the spine has several patches missing. Interior binding of the text pages are secure, nothing torn or loose though some pages have creases from folds. Front pastedown has a small typed label showing the owners name and city. The first page still has the erratum slip of paper attached. Last end page has a crease caused by a page fold. Pages are toned due to age and scattered foxing is present with the end pages being the worst.

Mr. Hale (1812-1863) graduated from Yale in 1830 and was a prominent figure in Pennsylvania state and local law practice, appointed Surveyor of the Port of Philadelphia and eventually named Quartermaster General of Pennsylvania in 1861. Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1935. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Good+. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Call softcover, no covers as issued as the pages are stapled together and meant to be placed in a military binder. The exterior shows spotting and foxing along with scuffs, corners and edges show bumps in small tears and there is a small stain on the left edge the front page. The interior binding is still tight as it does not appear this book was ever used. Interior pages are toned but are mostly clean - except for one spot at page 177 which has a couple smudge and foxing spots in light crease. The only handwriting found is on the front page which has a circled 1.00 written at the top in pencil. This is the December 1935 edition which contains 196 pages. The first half of the book contains information on diets, cutting of meats and vegetables etc. Starting at page 111 there are 331 recipes which cover everything from how to make 13 gallons… Read More
