First edition; 5 1/2" x 8"; pp. [13], ii-x, [4], 1-84, [6]; original pictorial wraps with title in English and Burmese; some age-darkening along spine; a few rubbed spots to upper margin of back cover; two portraits frontis; very good. Signed/inscribed by author to title page (additional bold signature to last free page). Friedrich Lustig was born in 1912 in Narva, Estonia. In the 1920s he traveled extensively through the Far East with his mentor and lifelong companion Karlis August M. Tennisons, also known as the Sangharaja of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia and who was the first to disseminate Buddhism in Estonia. Lustig entered monkhood in Thailand in 1933 receiving the name Ashin Ananda. He later proclaimed himself the Buddhist Archbishop of Latvia. The last pages of the book hold facsimiles of his certificate of monkhood and various congratulatory letters (from the Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam, "The Guardian," etc. Most of the poems express his love for Burma, but interestingly enough, one of them is a praise to President Nixon and is dedicated to his health and success.

The present work contains 10 of Irving's tales - Rip Van Winkle, The Inn Kitchen, The Specter Bridegroom, Christmas, The Stage-coach, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, The Christmas Dinner, Philip of Pokanoket, and The legend of Sleepy Hollow. Washington Irving was an American author and historian in the early 19th century. He was one of the first American writers to earn acclaim in Europe. He was a great proponent of stronger laws to protect American writers from copyright infringement.

A wonderful book.

Vicente de Carvalho Augusto was a Brazilian journalist, politician, poet, and short-story writer. His "Poemas e Cancoes" (Poems and Songs) marked the beginning of his poetic career.
