Description:
Valencia, 1744. [16],xcvi,279pp. Folio. Later vellum, manuscript lettering on spine. Text block detached from binding at front inner hinge. Minor foxing. Very good. First edition of a work which marks the beginning of modern Spanish historical writing. This study of the Romans, Jews, and Moors in Spain up to the 13th century was the most important work issued by the Academia Valenciana which had been founded in 1742 to publish historical studies. Preceded by a long and erudite introduction by Mayans y Siscar and by the Constitutions of the Academia, Ibanez de Segovia (1628-1708) reexamines ancient records in an effort to separate fact from fiction in Spanish history. Description:
Paris: Chez l'Auteur, Janvier 1856.. 240pp. 12mo. Original printed brown wrappers, expertly rebacked in matching brown paper. Wrappers a bit soiled, worn at edges. Small tear in upper margin of p.239, neatly repaired and not affecting text. Quite clean internally, and in very good condition. Untrimmed and unopenend. A scarce French printing of the principles, history, laws, constitution, and status of the Icarian communities in the United States. Founded by Étienne Cabet, the Icarian Community was among the most interesting Utopian experiments in the United States during the 19th century. After an unsuccessful attempt to settle in Texas, the Icarians established themselves in Nauvoo, Illinois, an abandoned Mormon town. After Cabet's death in 1856, the group splintered, with some of the remaining Illinois group moving to Corning, Iowa. This volume, published in the year of Cabet's death, offers his description of the community and the principles of its founding and operation, as well as the laws and… Read More

Description:
Denver: Frank G. Pabor, [1901].. 14pp. of text plus a single-page advertisement and a single-page map (the whole printed as sixteen panels on one side of a large sheet). Map on reverse, entitled "South-Eastern Idaho, The Best Watered Irrigated Region in the West," unfolding to 24 1/2 x 14 1/4 inches. Exterior panels slightly darkened. Some splitting along folds and at cross-folds. Good plus. An apparently unrecorded Snake River Valley map and land promotional issued by the Idaho Colony Company at the turn of the 20th century. The text, filling twelve panels on the opposite side of the map, extols the virtues of southeastern Idaho for farming and livestock, and particularly its inexhaustible potential for irrigation. The large and detailed folding map is titled "South-Eastern Idaho, The Best Watered Irrigated Region in the West." It shows much of the southeastern portion of the state, with a grid overlaying the "inexhaustible" irrigated lands touted by the promotional. The map also outlines the Fort… Read More

Description:
Washington: Government Printing Office, 1890. 94pp. plus folding map. Stapled, good. Original wrappers torn but present. The governor (George Shoup) reports on the population (113,777 people total!), public lands, railroads (total mileage and broken down by company), agriculture with a detailed description of each county, stock-raising, mining, forestry, education, Indians and Indian reservations, irrigation, militia, all the newspapers published, all the religous denominations represented and the finances. Perhaps the most interesting segment of this very informative report is the large section on the Idaho insane asylum. There is a description of a horrible fire, occurring in 1889, that killed several patients and allowed many others to escape. There are also many tables of information about the asylum, from the types of disorders, to the finances, to the daily activities of the patients. Overall, this thorough analysis appears to be the first report since Idaho gained statehood in July 1890

The work contains "an exact and particular description of the extent and limits of those countries, and the customs of the barbarous inhabitants; with reference to their religion, government, marriages, daily imployments, habits, habitations, diet, death, funerals, &c." Departing Moscow on a sled, he traveled across Siberia and on to Peking. The large folding map shows imperial Russia, while the plates show people and scenes along the way. [AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM KING GEORGE III TO BRITISH SECRETARY OF STATE LORD HAWKESBURY,...

Description:
Windsor, May 12, 1803.. [1]p., on an 8¾ x 6¾-inch sheet. Left margin reinforced with thicker paper, old folds. Mostly minor losses along left margin, just touching first letters of several words. Very good. A royal letter of profound import written entirely in the hand of King George III, and signed "George R." Here the British King writes hastily to Lord Hawkesbury, his Secretary of State, outlining the lack of recent communications from his emissaries in Paris who were conducting peacetime negotiations with Napoleon after the failure of the Treaty of Amiens the year before. King George III mentions receiving dispatches from Lord Whitworth, who was serving as the King's ambassador to France at the time; interestingly, it was Whitworth to whom Napoleon threatened war if Great Britain did not evacuate Malta just a few months earlier, in February 1803. Whitworth himself evacuated France the day after the present letter was written, in full knowledge that peace negotiations were over. The King also… Read More

London: Printed by the Assigns of John Bill and Christopher Barker, 1675. Broadside, 22 x 14 1/2 inches, printed on two sheets. Old fold lines. Repaired with tissue on verso along vertical fold. A few other small tears or tissue repairs. Very good. A rare broadside announcing the decree of the English government that all foreign goods destined for British colonies must first pass through England, a policy of mercantilism later termed the "triangle trade." "This program permitted the profits from colonial trade and commerce to center in England, promoted British shipping, and enabled the British government to support itself by taxing this trade as it flowed through England" - DAH. The English government began its mercantilist policies under the Commonwealth government, in a series of "navigation acts" which regulated English trade. The first Navigation Act, passed in 1651, targeted Dutch commerce. It stipulated that only English ships could carry freight into English territories, and that if a ship… Read More

Description:
[Springfield & Jacksonville, I, 1834. Three printed broadsides. Condition detailed below. An early example of the potential for viciousness in American politics. These broadsides pertain to the 1834 Congressional election in Illinois's 3rd District. William L. May ran against Benjamin Mills for the seat left vacant by Joseph Duncan, who had resigned to become governor. Abraham Lincoln, who was first elected as an Illinois State Representative in August of this same year, served as a clerk for the election in the Springfield house of William F. Barry, and voted for May, a Democrat, who received seventy-two votes, against only three for Mills. In 1844, Lincoln and then-former Congressman May purportedly engaged in a heated, three-day debate on the tariff at the Main Street Presbyterian Church in Peoria. May, a lawyer and mercantilist, served variously as Justice of the Peace, a state and federal legislator, and mayor of Springfield. He went to California during the Gold Rush and died in Sacramento on… Read More

Boston, 1857.. 80pp. plus illustrations and two maps. Frontis. Original pictorial wrappers. Chipped at spine ends, light stain in fore-edge of front wrapper and upper outer corner of final twenty pages. Even tanning. Still, very good. A promotional for available lands along the railroad across the state of Illinois. The two maps depict a comprehensive national railroad map as well as a detailed view of the Illinois railroad system. The Illinois Central Railroad lands run along the system's two lines - one running north and south through the center of the state, and the other branching northward toward Chicago from Centralia. The text provides much agricultural and geological information, as well as testimonial letters praising the quality of the soil. There are also sections discussing the cost of moving to Chicago, and giving prices of products, fuel, and fencing. Buck shows that several similar publications were issued by the railroad from 1855 to the early 1870s. There is another issue of this… Read More
