The BOOK is in near Fine condition and appears unread. A hint of pushing at the spine tips. Some toning to the text-block and outer page edges due to the quality of the paper stock used. One of only 150 sets produced by Simon Lawrence at the Fleece Press. The Box, bibliography booklet and engravings are all in Fine condition. Five engravings all housed within their own individual printed folder. Paper size 40 x 32 cm. The engravings are : 'The Return 1925', 'The Carol Singers 1930', 'Marsh Marigolds 1930', 'The Smithy 1930', 'The Mother 1931'. The 16 page bibliography on hand made paper is housed within its own folder. It details and references amongst other things, the bibliographic details of each of the engravings. A very scarce production. With the scarce Ashmolean Museum 'Claughton Pellew Wood Engravings' 1987 Exhibition Catalogue 1987. This pictorial card catalogue is in Fine condition with 35 B/W plates. The sole UK Printing published by Horseshoe Publishing Co. Ltd in 1924. The BOOK is in VERY GOOD + or better condition. The binding is tight and is free of inscriptions. Some light offsetting to the end- papers. The boards are a little rubbed and bumped in places. The girl titling is slightly dulled. There is a small splash mark to the front cover (see images). The pages are clean with just a little light scattered spotting throughout. The page edges are lightly toned as expected with the quality of paper used. John Piper has provided five decorations to his poems and also one for the title page. No wrapper as issued. The book is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. The binding remains very tight. The laminated boards remain very bright and there is NO fading of the yellow lettering to the spine which is commonly encountered. A title page from another first edition copy has been signed (without dedication) by Philip Pullman and affixed to the front blank end-paper. Profusely illustrated throughout in B/W by Nick Harris. No wrapper as issued. The book is protected in a loose archival Mylar cover. One of the scarcest Pullman titles with most copies having entered the library system. The BOOK is in Very Good+ condition. Number '5' of only 25 copies on Japan vellum (There were also 250 copies on Rives vellum). There is splitting with some light rubbing along the spine folds especially to the rear lower halves but the binding remains very tight - This is more of a cosmetic issue. Light fading to the spine but the gilt titling to the spine and front remains bright. Top edge gilt.
