Patterned paper over boards, printed paper front cover label; binding square and tight, extra glue in front and rear end-papers cause adhering and offsetting. Good. Printed by Roger Hilleary on a Columbian hand press. Text hand set in Eric Gill's Joanna italic with display types in Joanna roman and Perpetua. This book was printed on the occasion of the issue of the John Steinbeck commemorative postage stamp, used as the frontispiece. [9] pp. Accordion-fold sheet with a panorama of mountaintops with birds in the foreground, the top half of each page contains a black border, blue sky, and John Muir's text recognizing how life encourages life, letterpress printed on Peter's hand-made paper; text clean, unmarked. The spine of this creative "piano-pin" binding consists of 3 wooden dowels, the central dowel has the accordion-fold sheet attached to it, while the fore-dowel holds a single-page leaf without text and not counted in the pagination, and both the fore- and aft dowels are attached to the colorful end-papers attached to the boards, the out-side of the boards are also covered with a lovely paste-paper and gilt-titled on the front cover; binding square and tight. SA1019-008. Fine. LIMITED EDITION of 97 copies, this is number 51. This book contains a text by John Muir that acknowledges the human need to be in communion with nature. Illustrated by Donna Thomas. Welsh was a publisher, collector, historian and bibliographer of miniature books. For many years, Welsh was Head of the Catalogue Department at Chicago's Newberry Library; she collected miniature books as her private passion. Having taken several classes in printing and binding at the Newberry, she decided to print miniature books of her own. This is her last miniature book, her activities restricted due to a stroke she suffered in 1965. John Walsdorf is a collector of William Morris-related books and ephemera who passed away July 9th, 2017. The Beaverdam Press is the private press of Earl H. Henness; he published 3 miniature books in the past century. The Moser frontispiece for this book is one of only two engravings by Moser in a miniature book. The Nethery's used Chesterton as a favorite source of material for their miniature books. Here the Netherys show the artistic treatments Beerbohm gave to his literary contemporary. GK519-009. Fine. This miniature volume reprints Arthur Golding's 1567 translation of Ovid's Metamorphoses. The story of Icarus and his fall from the sun has been the most widely reprinted story from Ovid's tales. Here, the story is accompanied by a graceful red line drawing by Bonnie Baris. Robert Baris was the proprietor of the Wind & Harlot Press, where he printed over a dozen miniature books from 1981 to 1992, after studying with J. Hill Hamon at the Whippoorwill Press. The four views of Kealakekua Bay include texts by Captain James Cook (1779); Mark Twain (1866), Johnny Noble (1933), and Donna Thomas' multi-color linocut. A lovely volume. [4] pp. The text is printed on a single sheet in black and red inks, the sheet is french-fold and stapled into stiff blue printed wrappers with black title on the front cover; text clean, unmarked, binding square and tight, minor shelf wear. Very Good. The text contains an appeal for peace by the President of the Swiss Gutenberg Museum on the eve of World War II. Apparently the first miniature book issued by Norman Forgue. See Bradbury, p. 19 for an account of Norman Forgue's bad memory when it came to dating his miniature books. At one point Forgue believed that Averill, Judge Not a Book by its Cover (1938) to have been the first miniature issued by the Black Cat Press. REFERENCE: Bradbury, 20th Cent.
