Detailed depiction of the Nile River Valley oriented to the west, with ancient place names. Inset (Bellorum Alexandrini et Pontici Conspectus) shows the Eastern Mediterranean at the time of Alexander the Great. In margin at upper right: “Vol IV, Page 149.” Margins narrow but ample (between ¼" x 3/8 inch). Bit of color displaced on border at upper right, adhesive repair at edge of verso (not affecting image) , hinging remnant at upper corners. Later hand-colored outline, with coloring of cartouche. Attractive copper engraving. .

Jan Jansson was part of an influential family of map publishers from the Netherlands throughout the 17th century and beyond. They were based in Arnhem then in Amsterdam. They were printers, publishers and booksellers. Major publications were under the joint ownership of the Jansson heirs and their printing empire.

    Brussels: Vandermaelen, Phillipe Marie, 1827. unbound. very good. Map. Large format lithograph with original hand outline color. Image measures 18.75" x 19 1/8". Sheet measures 21" x 27". Shows some foxing and a few tears to edges. Beautifully detailed map that shows Bejing ("Pekin") and surrounding provinces. Mountains are delicately treated with hachure marks and major rivers and waterways are also shown. From Vandermaelen's 6 volume "Atlas universel de geographie physique, politique, statistique et mineralogique, sur l'echelle de 1/16411836". The atlas was the first to map the world on a uniform scale; maps were meant to join together to form a huge globe.Phillippe Marie Vandermaelen (1795-1869) was a Belgian cartographer and publisher. This map is a fine example of his work.

    Philadelphia: Tanner, H.S.. unbound. very good. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 18 x 20.75". Sheet measures 23.75 x 31". Shows some foxing and staining. Small tear at bottom along original fold line, does not extend into image. In very good condition. This large map of Asia offers ample detail in both the mainland and the islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It extends from the Arctic Circle south to New Zealand, and from Italy east to Polynesia. With its fine engraving and wealth of labeled information, the map exemplifies the qualities that have led historians to consider the "New American Atlas" from which it is sourced as one of the most magnificent atlases ever published in the United States. The map is in excellent condition with deluxe margins. Henry Schenck Tanner (1786-2858) was an American cartographer and statistical geographer. Born in New York, he moved to Philadelphia where he established his well-known publishing company with his brother. Tanner was the first American to publish a map of Texas, which subsequently went through eight editions. However, he is best known and most renowned for his New American Atlas. This fine map of Asia is a wonderful example of his work.
