The American Frontier by McNeese, Tim

Dayton: Milliken Publishing Company. New with no dust jacket. 2002. Revised Edition. Paperback. New book which may have light wear on edges or corners from display or storage. ; American Experience; 111 pages; This book provides a detailed and richly illustrated overview of the westward expansion of colonial and post-colonial America through diplomacy, war, wanderlust, and grit. The frontier is defined and demythologized as Hollywood's stereotypical portrayals are replaced with factual yet no less fascinating and lively depictions of pioneer life. Daniel Boone, the Louisiana Purchase, the explorations of Lewis and Clark, the subjugation of the Indians, the Mexican-American War, and the building of the transcontinental railroad are among the events and personalities vividly described. Challenging review questions encourage meaningful reflection and historical analysis. Maps, tests, answer key, and extensive bibliography included. For grades 7-12. Student pages may be reproduced for one copy each for the students of one teacher for a single course .

American Characters: They Marched to a Different Drummer 1850-1950 by Greenberg, Morrie

Summerlin, NV: Brooke-Richards Press. New. 2007. Paperback. 95 pages; This 8.5 x 11 size softcover book contains 15 high-interest stories about American historical figures that are not widely known. They are designed to appeal to those who can't seem to get into the regular texts provided in most secondary history courses. Each short story is preceded by a time line to put it into the correct historical context, and short paragraphs to describe what else was happening during the period in which the story takes place. After each story are some suggested writing/journal activities, some vocabulary or comprehension activities, some discussion activities, and some related group activities. Each story also has a black and white illustration. The activities are designed to make students think about and respond to what they have read -- not just parrot it back. .
