This copy signed and inscribed: A M[onsieur] Phillipe de Vilmorin, souvenir bien cordiel. Aug. Chevalier. From the series Les Végétaux utiles de lAfrique tropicale française; fasc.4. Auguste Jean Baptiste Chevalier (1873 --1956) was the pre-eminent French botanist, taxonomist and explorer of tropical Africa, especially of the French colonial empire in Africa. Joseph-Marie-Philippe Lévêque de Vilmorin (1872 1917) was a noted French botanist and plant collector, and a member of the celebrated Vilmorin family of horticulturists. Vilmorin produced three important publications: Les Fleurs de Pleine Terre, Le Manuel de Floriculture and the Hortus Vilmorinianus. He organized the Fourth International Conference on Genetics, held in Paris, September 1823, 1911. His bookplate features three irises. Nine copies were located. This is a fine association copy, signed and inscribed to another eminent botanist.
